'EVANGELIUM VITAE' Symposium is planned by diocese

NORTH CANTON -- The Catholic Diocese of Youngstown will sponsor a symposium in observance of the 10th anniversary of the release of Pope John Paul II's encyclical "Evangelium Vitae -- The Gospel of Life" on April 30 at Walsh University, 2020 East Maple St.
John Paul II's landmark encyclical has had a wide impact on the church and on the world. In the encyclical, the pope demonstrated that the sacredness of life is not just a "Catholic issue," but rather that modern-day threats to human life are of concern to all people of good will.
The message of "the Gospel of life" is "respect life," wrote the pope, "respect, protect, love and serve, life, every human life, from conception to natural death."
Among the featured speakers and topics include: the Rev. Tadeusz Pacholcyzk, director of the National Catholic Bioethics Center in Philadelphia, who will present "Of Embryos and Souls," Should We Be Cloning Humans?"; Sister of Life Mary Elizabeth, S.V., graduate of Franciscan University in Steubenville, now director of the Marriage and Family/Respect Life Office of the Archdiocese of New York, whose topic is "Building a New culture of Human Life"; and Peter Koritansky, professor of philosophy at Walsh University, whose presentation is "The Gospel of Life: The Good News."
The symposium is open to the public. Registration is $10, which includes luncheon, if received by Friday. After Friday the fee is $12. Registration will be accepted at the door, though lunch will not be available. To register, call (330) 744-8451, Ext. 289.
