Seven places
A Mississippi garden with a literary pedigree, a coral reef off the Florida Keys and a trail from Mexico to Canada are among seven places singled out by the April issue of Smithsonian Magazine as top U.S. destinations for spring and summer trips. The places, which the magazine calls "Destination America," are:
Little Bighorn Battlefield, in Hardin, Mont., the site of Custer's last stand, where a bronze-wire sculpture of three Indian warriors on horseback was dedicated in 2003.
The 1930s-era garden at the Jackson, Miss., home of the late writer Eudora Welty. The garden, which is being preserved and restored, inspired Welty, and references to some of its flowers appear in her works.
Cape Cod's Route 6A, a two-lane, 34-mile trip past salt marshes, tidal flats, woodlands, 18th century graveyards, beach colonies and local museums.
Pennekamp State Park in Key Largo, where you can snorkel or take a glass-bottom boat to see a colorful underwater coral reef teeming with sea creatures.
Ojo Caliente, N.M., 50 miles from Santa Fe, where you can learn to make Native American-style pottery and visit ancient hot springs.
The soaring Quadrucci Pavilion, built in 2001 as an addition to the Milwaukee Art Museum on the shores of Lake Michigan. The building's hinged glass roof has two wings that open.
The 2,650-mile Pacific Crest National Scenic Trail, a wilderness treasure running from the Mexican border through California, Oregon and Washington to Canada.
