PREP SOFTBALL Pitcher Hertz is perfect for Poland, 10-0



The Senior struck out 15 of 18 Salem batters as the Bulldogs improved to 6-0.
POLAND -- Senior Kristy Hertz struck out 15 batters and pitched a six-inning perfect game Wednesday as Poland High School defeated Salem 10-0 in a Metro Athletic Conference softball game.
Hertz (3-0) allowed just three batters to put the ball in play, all groundouts. It was Hertz's first career perfect game.
Ashley Conger went 4-for-4 at the plate for the Bulldogs (6-0, 1-0 MAC), including a home run, and four RBIs. Amanda Gittings went 3-for-3 with four RBIs, and Kari Thompson homered.
Ursuline 6, Mooney 0
YOUNGSTOWN -- The Irish's Maureen Cearfoss evened her record at 2-2 as she pitched a complete-game victory, scattering four hits and striking out three.
Ashley Koval hit a two-run single for the Irish.
Gina Brunetti hit two singles for the Cardinals (1-3).
Canfield 11, Struthers 0
STRUTHERS -- Lauren Sulick pitched a two-hit shutout to lead Canfield in a Metro Athletic Conference game.
Terrie Haurin led the Cardinals at the plate with a pair of doubles and four RBIs, while Lauren McGivern added three singles as the Cardinals improved to 6-1, 2-0 MAC.
Fitch 5, Western Reserve 2
BERLIN CENTER -- Jen Purnell scattered six hits as Fitch won its first game of the season.
Staci Dalkin had two singles and drove in two runs, while Maribeth McHenry also drove in a pair of runs for the Falcons (1-1). Nicole Smaldino had a double.
Western Reserve, which lost for the first time in four games, was led by McKenzie Mowery with two hits and two RBIs.
Chaney 13, Rayen 3
YOUNGSTOWN -- Kristen Bielik hit a home run and a double and drove in three runs as Chaney defeated Rayen at Pemberton Park.
Stephanie Merrell also had a double for the Cowboys (1-1), while Terra Koontz scattered six hits in picking up the victory.
Mathews 7, McDonald 6
MCDONALD -- Mathews jumped out to an early lead and then held off McDonald to post its third win of the season.
Sarah King, Alycia Kolet and Sue McAlcul all had two hits in the win for the Mustangs (3-3). Ali Stein pitched the victory.
Jackson-Milton 20, Lordstown 1
LORDSTOWN -- Khrisa Kiraly pitched a five-hitter and added three singles as Jackson-Milton won its third game of the season.
Kortney Gharerdi added three hits including a double and drove in five runs for the Bluejays (3-1).
Carrie Fiol and Jodi Richmond each had two hits. Des Cavanugh added a triple.
Mineral Ridge 4, Lowellville 3
MINERAL RIDGE -- Katie Garland, Jami Goodman and Melanie Sparks all bunted safely in the bottom of the seventh inning to help the Rams (4-1, 1-0 Inter-County League)
Winning pitcher Kaili Gehring (4-1) singled home Garland with the deciding run.
She worked a complete game with six strikeouts. Garland added two singles.
Champion 1, Lakeview 0
CHAMPION -- Kasey Karr scattered four hits and drove in the game's only run in a Trumbull Athletic Conference contest.
Karr had 11 strikeouts, and, at the plate, a double and single. Her single knocked in Hillary Beachy in the third inning, after Beachy singled and advanced to second on a sacrifice by Brittany Skeels. Beachy finished with two singles.
Hubbard 6, Liberty 5
LIBERTY -- Gabby Flynn (2-0), led the Eagles (2-0) with two singles and she drove in a run. She also pitched a complete game, with six strikeouts.
Michelle Dykes hit a triple, two singles and scored twice for the Leopards (0-1).
Waterloo 8, Southeast 2
RAVENNA -- Jen Graham tossed a four-hitter, while Missy Zehnder hit three doubles to lead Waterloo to its third straight victory.
Ashley Beans and Jen Graham each had a pair of singles and Sarah Bearshock added a double for the Vikings.
Jess Hines drove in both Southeast (0-2) runs with a single.
