NEW YORK -- Playing without ailing manager Terry Francona, Boston rallied for five runs against Mariano Rivera in the ninth inning. Francona was taken to a hospital in the morning with tightness in his chest and awaited test results. Bench coach Brad Mills filled in for Francona. Yankees captain Derek Jeter left after he was hit on the helmet by a pitch in the eighth. A CT scan was normal, New York said, and he is expected to play Friday.
Royals 7, Tigers 2
DETROIT -- Runelvys Hernandez won his first start in more than a year and Tony Graffanino had four hits. Hernandez (1-0) gave up one run and five hits in seven innings, walked three and struck out three. Jeremy Affeldt, Kansas City's third pitcher, completed the six-hitter, giving up an RBI triple to Dmitri Young in the ninth.
Devil Rays 8, Blue Jays 5
ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. -- Jorge Cantu capped a six-run, eighth-inning rally with a ti-e-breaking, three-run homer. Cantu hit a 1-2 pitch from Jason Speier over the left-field wall after the Devil Rays overcame a 5-2 deficit on Aubrey Huff's two-run double off Scott Schoeneweis (0-1) and on Chris Singleton's RBI single off Speier.
Twins 4, Mariners 1
SEATTLE -- Carlos Silva allowed one run in seven innings and Matthew LeCroy hit a three-run homer for Minnesota. Silva gave up nine hits -- including Bret Boone's solo homer leading off the second. Joe Nathan pitched a perfect ninth for his first save. The Twins had a scare in the eighth when first baseman Justin Morneau was hit in the right temple by a pitch from left-handed reliever Ron Villone, though the batting helmet appeared to absorb most of the impact. Morneau dropped to the ground and manager Ron Gardenhire immediately rushed out with an athletic trainer. Morneau stayed on his back for about one minute, with his head propped up by a rolled-up towel. He was helped to his feet and walked off on his own, then taken for a precautionary CT scan.
Athletics 9, Orioles 0
BALTIMORE -- Substitute starter Kirk Saarloos pitched six innings of one-hit ball, and rookie Nick Swisher hit two of Oakland's four home runs. Eric Chavez and Keith Ginter also homered for the Athletics. Saarloos (1-0) started in place of right-hander Rich Harden, who was sidelined with a blister on his right middle finger.

Nationals 7, Phillies 3
PHILADELPHIA -- Brad Wilkerson hit for the cycle for the second time in his career and Jose Guillen hit a go-ahead two-run homer in the eighth to lead Washington to its first victory. Vinny Castilla was 4-for-5 with two doubles and an RBI for the Nationals.
Astros 4, Cardinals 1
HOUSTON -- Andy Pettitte allowed only a solo homer to Reggie Sanders in a strong six-inning season debut, and Mike Lamb's two-run triple in the bottom of the eighth led Houston. Chad Qualls pitched two perfect innings and Brad Lidge got three outs to help the Astros break a three-game losing streak against the Cardinals, dating to Game 6 of the NL championship series last October. Julian Tavarez took the loss, allowing three runs on four hits.
Reds 9, Mets 5
CINCINNATI -- Joe Randa hit a bases-loaded single and a grand slam that powered Cincinnati. Randa got the Reds going with a two-run single in the first off Tom Glavine. He hit his second career grand slam in the eighth off Mike DeJean, a shot off the batter's eye in center field. Tom Glavine is 25-12 against the Reds, his second-highest victory total against any team, but control problems and two borderline calls led to a rare meltdown -- five runs in only 3 2/3 innings. Eric Milton got the win in his Cincinnati debut, going 5 2/3 innings and allowing homers to Doug Mientkiewicz and David Wright.
Braves 2, Marlins 1, 13 innings
MIAMI -- Chipper Jones homered on the first pitch of the 13th inning, and seven Atlanta pitchers shut out Florida for the final 11 1/3 innings. Jones drove in both Atlanta runs and finished 4-for-6. Adam Bernero (1-0) pitched two scoreless innings and got Juan Pierre to ground out with the potential winning run at second to end the 12th. Braves closer Dan Kolb pitched a perfect 13th for his first save.
Padres 14, Rockies 6
DENVER -- Brian Giles homered for the second straight game and had five RBIs, and San Diego battered Colorado's bullpen for seven runs in the seventh inning. Rockies rookie Clint Barmes homered for the second straight game, but Colorado couldn't overcome another shaky start from Jason Jennings and more trouble from its bullpen. Khalil Greene and Eric Young drove in two runs apiece, and Sean Burroughs had three of San Diego's 13 hits.
