Composting seminars
CANFIELD -- The Green Team, Mahoning County's recycling agency, will host two backyard composting seminars at Mill Creek Farm, state Route 46, at 1 p.m. and 3 p.m. April 17. Cost is $5 for Mahoning County residents, $50 for nonresidents. The one-hour session will include video instruction and discussion, and registrants will receive a backyard compost bin ($40 value), informational booklet and compost aerator. Call for phone books
YOUNGSTOWN -- The Youngstown Litter Control and Recycling Department is sponsoring a phone book recycling drive from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. April 11-12 on Front Street, next to the Convocation Center. Magazine and catalog recycling will take place from 1 to 7 p.m. April 20 at North Side Pool; 1 to 7 p.m. May 18 at Mahoning Plaza; 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. June 15 at Four Seasons Flea Market; 1 to 7 p.m. July 20 at Big Lots, Midlothian Boulevard; and 1 to 7 p.m. Aug. 17 at St. Christine parish. Child safety seat event
NEW CASTLE, Pa.-- Pennsylvania State Police will conduct child car seat checks from noon to 3 p.m. Wednesday at the post, 3539 Wilmington Road. Take your vehicle owner's manual, child car seat and instructions, towels and your child. More than 80 percent of all child car seats are improperly installed, the state police said.
District to remove freon
WARREN -- The Geauga-Trumbull Solid Waste Management District has scheduled free appliance collections for Trumbull and Geauga county residents from 6 to 9 p.m. Thursday and April 12 at the new collection facility, 5138 Enterprise Blvd. Follow the yellow signs to the site. Freon will be removed from appliances. Refrigerators, air conditioners, dehumidifiers, hot water tanks and stoves will be accepted, but no televisions or microwave ovens.
