TRUMBULL SLAYING Husband pleads innocent

Bond was set at $1 million.
WARREN -- His head swathed in bandages, Timothy Smith came to court this morning to answer to charges that he murdered his wife.
Smith, 42, has been in Trumbull County Jail since Wednesday afternoon, when he was arrested from a bed in the intensive care unit of Forum Health Trumbull Memorial Hospital.
He is accused of stabbing his wife, Lizette, multiple times early Sunday at the home they shared at 2528 Kenwood Drive S.W.
Sped away
Police say Smith sped off in a car after the killing, eventually crashing into the Peerless-Winsmith Inc. building at 1401 W. Market St.
Smith appeared before Warren Municipal Court Judge Terry F. Ivanchak via closed-circuit television from the county jail. He is charged with aggravated murder.
"I don't have a home right now," he responded in a husky voice when the judge asked for his current address.
He gave the address of his mother on Hamilton Southwest.
Judge Ivanchak entered a plea of innocent for Smith and set bond at $1 million.
Smith told the court he has been unemployed since April.
His wife was a secretary at the Ohio Bureau of Workers' Compensation.
Other charges
Smith also faces misdemeanor charges of driving under suspension, reckless operation, and failing to use a seat belt for what police say was his wild drive from his former home on the day of the killing.
Judge Ivanchak told Smith that an aggravated murder conviction could result in a sentence of 15 years to life.
Timothy and Lizette Smith were married two years ago by then-Mayor Hank Angelo. Police say a picture of the ceremony hung in the couple's home.
