YOUNGSTOWN -- A city man jailed without bond in the death of his former girlfriend is asking that his bond be reinstated so he can be released to await trial.
Edward C. Anderson, 58, of East Philadelphia Avenue, is charged with murder in the July 15 death of Mary M. Thompson, 37, who lived with him at the South Side address.
Anderson, who has "Fast Eddie" painted on the side of his pickup truck, was arrested shortly after the shooting, and Judge Elizabeth A. Kobly of Youngstown Municipal Court set a bond of $100,000. Anderson posted the bond July 20 and was released from jail.
In the meantime, his case was bound over to common pleas court, where he was to appear for arraignment Aug. 2. When Anderson didn't show up, a warrant was issued for his arrest and his bond was revoked. Police later arrested him and he has been in the Mahoning County Jail since then.
Had good reason
In documents filed this week in county common pleas court, defense attorney Douglas B. Taylor said Anderson had a legitimate reason for not appearing at his arraignment and asked Judge James C. Evans to reinstate the bond.
Taylor said Anderson was admitted to a veterans' hospital for psychiatric treatment the night before he was to be arraigned. He said that Anderson did not attempt to flee the area and that he surrendered to authorities after his release from the hospital Aug. 6.
Would be released
Assistant Prosecutor Jay Macejko said that if the judge approves Anderson's request, he would be released from jail because he has already posted the bond.
"We will absolutely oppose this," Macejko said. "He has already shown himself to be a flight risk," meaning there is a chance that Anderson would leave the area to avoid prosecution if he is released from jail.
