SOCCER Amato's shot finds its mark

HOWLAND -- With 22 minutes remaining, freshman forward Deja Amato headed in a ball from seven yards out as the Howland High girls soccer team beat Niles 1-0 Wednesday.
Erin Gilmour had the assist for the Tigers (7-0-2, 6-0 Metro Athletic Conference).
Howland, the top seed in the Division I sectional tournament, has a two-game lead in the MAC standings with four games remaining.
Niles (9-2-1, 5-2) was out-shot 28-2.
Kelsey Mikesell saved 16 shots in the Niles goal.
Poland 7, Alliance 0
POLAND -- Jackie Cavalier scored two goals to lead the Bulldogs (7-2-1, 4-2) past Alliance in a MAC game.
Also scoring for Poland were Sarah Anderson, Maureen Malone, Ellen Midgley, Stephanie Armstrong and Sam Stanich.
Anderson and Armstrong added assists.
Poland goalkeeper Pam Shure made one save.
Alliance is 2-5-3, 0-5.
Fitch 8, Lake 0
AUSTINTOWN -- Brittney Getz scored four goals, while Jodi Bowlen added three and Dina Harris one as the Falcons breezed by Lake in a Federal League game.
Bowlen also recorded two assists, while Courtney Ciavarella, Tiarra Sanders and Erica Bortmas added one each.
Goalkeeper Cara Calai made 10 saves. She preserved the shutout for the Falcons (6-3-3, 4-1) by stopping a penalty kick.
Lake is 5-5-1, 1-4.
Boardman 4, Canton GlenOak 3
BOARDMAN -- With 0.8 seconds to go, Katie Stoll drove a header into the net off a corner kick by Caitlyn Hackett to give Boardman the Federal League win.
Senior Lauren Sirak scored the first goal off an assist by Hackett, and Stoll made it 2-0 on a pass from Mallory Hay.
Stoll also added a goal from 25 yards out to give Boardman a 3-2 lead at the half.
Boardman out shot GlenOak 27-11. Spartan keeper Lani Vlad had four saves.
Newton Falls 4, Girard 0
NEWTON FALLS -- Four different players scored for the Tigers in their Trumbull Athletic Conference victory over Girard.
Alexis Seifert, Mary Jo Spletzer, Kortni Collins and Kirsti Collins found the net for Newton Falls (4-5-3, 3-3 TAC).
Spletzer, Bethany Runtus and Allie Fetterolf added assists.
Newton Falls goalkeepers Grace Spletzer and Jessica Moser combined for five saves.
Girard keeper Sara Britt made nine saves.
Akron SVSM 2, Warren JFK 1
AKRON -- After the Irish (8-4-2) took a 1-0 lead at the half, Lauren Perisa scored with about 10 minutes remaining for the Eagles (6-6).
Lexie Polivka got the assist for JFK.
The Irish scored the winning goal with five minutes remaining.
Badger 5, Maplewood 3
KINSMAN -- Tessa Bonar scored twice, while Hannah Miller, Jenna Miller and Alivia Nuzzo had a goal apiece for the Braves (10-2, 5-0 Northeastern Athletic Conference).
Bonar, Hannah Miller, Nuzzo and Amanda Gordon each had an assist.
Leah Dean scored twice and Kristine Peterson recorded the other for the Rockets (3-6-2, 2-3).
Lyndsey Pacurian and Rachel Senfenner each assisted on a Maplewood goal.
The game was tied at the half, 2-2.

BELOIT -- Nikki Brown scored twice as the Warriors (6-6, 3-0 Northeastern Buckeye Conference) opened a 4-0 lead at the break.
Vana Morgan, Ashley Kurena and Kurtney Salvino all scored a goal apiece.
Boys
CANTON -- Austin Dangler scored two goals to lead United past Canton Timken, 4-0.
Shawn Timmons and Brock Volio also added goals for the Eagles (5-4-1).
Assisting for United was Ben Taylor, Sarah Martin and Timmons. Goalkeeper Spencer Widlicka made four saves.
Bristol 3, Mathews 0
VIENNA -- Eric Maraczi scored once and Bristol got two own-goals by Mathews in the Panthers' NAC victory.
Bristol had 52 shots on goal, forcing Mathews keeper Brett Ford to make 37 saves.
