MACOMB, Ill. -- Two Western Illinois University football players have been suspended from the team after being charged in a weekend burglary in Macomb, university officials said.
Defensive back William Penn and defensive lineman Michael Black were each charged with residential burglary after police responded to a report of a burglary in progress Sunday at a home near the WIU campus, authorities said.
Black, a sophomore who has appeared in no games this season, was found inside the house, police said. Penn, a junior special teams player and reserve cornerback, was found in a car outside, police said. A window was broken to gain entry, according to reports.
During an initial court appearance Monday, Black said he knows the people who live in the house. Penn said Black had simply asked him for a ride to a friend's house.
Black, 19, of North Miami Beach, Fla., is free on $25,000 bond, while Penn, 20, of Rialto, Calif., posted $5,000 bond. A preliminary hearing for both men is scheduled for Oct. 18 in McDonough County Circuit Court.
Both players have been suspended from the football team until the court cases conclude, said WIU spokesman Jason Kaufman.
Colorado
DENVER -- A judge set a trial date Wednesday for a lawsuit against the University of Colorado that touched off a scandal in the football program over allegations that sex, drugs and alcohol were used to lure recruits.
A judge set a May 31 date for the federal suit filed by former student Lisa Simpson, who said she was raped by players or recruits at an off-campus party in 2001.
Simpson, who has agreed to have her name used in media reports, last week sought to add allegations that school officials retaliated against her for filing the suit. She withdrew the request Wednesday after U.S. Magistrate Craig Shaffer said that could delay the trial until 2006.
