BIG TEN Nittany Lions getting thin at quarterback slot

For the last 33 years, Joe Paterno relied on assistant Fran Ganter. These days, it's another member of the Ganter family.
Chris Ganter, a fourth-year junior who came into this year never having completed a collegiate pass, may start at quarterback when Penn State plays at No. 18 Minnesota on Saturday.
His father, Paterno's good friend and a longtime assistant, moved over to an administrative position prior to this season.
The young Ganter, who has mostly been a holder on kicks, was summoned after Penn State lost its top two quarterbacks in the first quarter of Saturday's 16-3 loss at Wisconsin.
Zach Mills, a left-hander, went down with a partially separated right shoulder on the first play of the game. Then Michael Robinson was crushed by Wisconsin end Erasmus James and sustained a concussion.
May play Saturday
Mills is hopeful he can play Saturday. Robinson will not play for at least two weeks.
"When the doctors are around you saying, 'Do you feel this? Do you feel that?' And I'm like, 'Do I feel what?"' Robinson said of his frightening ambulance ride to the hospital. "To be playing a sport as long as I have and to not really have anything serious like this happen and then to have this happen, it's scary."
That left Ganter to face a fearsome Wisconsin rush. He completed just 6 of 23 passes for 32 yards.
"I thought Chris did a good job under the conditions," Paterno said.
Still undecided
Paterno hesitated to say what the rotation will be at quarterback this week. If medical personnel can somehow protect Mills' shoulder, he may play. Ganter would be next in the pecking order, followed by freshman Anthony Morelli.
Paterno considered throwing Morelli into the fire, but didn't feel the rookie had gotten enough work during the week in practice. That, of course, will be different this week.
"I am not going to panic," Paterno said. "I think that both Chris and Morelli will be OK."
