CLEVELAND Scott Williams, Cavaliers agree on one-year deal
The 36-year-old center was with the Bulls when Chicago won three NBA titles.
CLEVELAND (AP) -- Veteran center Scott Williams signed a one-year contract with the Cleveland Cavaliers on Tuesday, giving the team an experienced big man to back up Zydrunas Ilgauskas on what remains a relatively young team.
Financial terms were not disclosed.
Williams, 36, started for four years at the University of North Carolina but was not drafted. He signed as a free agent in 1990 with Chicago and went on to win three NBA titles with the Bulls.
Williams told reporters Tuesday that he's healthy and wants to play as much as possible with Ilgauskas and backup center DeSagana Diop.
Legs live
"I feel good. Actually, my body feels extremely young again," Williams said. "I've got young, live legs."
Cavaliers general manager Jim Paxson said the team wasn't concerned about Williams' age because Williams has kept in shape and relishes the role of being a team leader -- even as a backup player.
"Scott will be a valuable contributor for us on the court and to our team in the locker room," Paxson said. "He helps solidify our frontcourt rotation and gives us another proven winner. His insight and experience will be a tremendous asset to our team."
During his 14-year professional career, the 6-foot-10, 260-pound center/forward also played with Dallas, Phoenix, Philadelphia, Milwaukee and Denver.
Williams has played 727 career games, including 94 playoff games. He played 43 games last season with Phoenix and Dallas, where he averaged 4.6 points and 3.1 rebounds in 12.3 minutes per game.
Earlier this month the Cavaliers lost out a chance to sign Iakovos "Jake" Tsakalidis when the reserve center signed a three-year contract with the Memphis Grizzlies.
Williams said he's looking forward to helping coach Paul Silas communicate with younger players on the rebuilding Cavaliers and playing with Rookie of the Year LeBron James.
