YSU Kilcawley Center will be host of daylong Hispanic conference



YOUNGSTOWN -- Ezra Escudero, executive director of the Ohio Commission in Hispanic/Latino Affairs, will provide the keynote speech as part of a daylong conference being held as part of Hispanic Heritage Month.
The free, public conference is set for 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday in Youngstown State University's Kilcawley Center. Escudero's speech will be at 10 a.m. in the center's Chestnut Room.
The conference is important because the number of Latinos in the United States is growing and they will have an impact, said Maggie McClendon, a YSU undergraduate admissions coordinator and one of the conference planners.
The conference also will include:
UA panel discussion on the book "Puerto Ricans: Who We Are" by Panama native Gisela Dieter from 11 a.m. to noon in the center's Ohio Room.
UA dance presentation from 1 to 2 p.m. in the Chestnut Room.
UA talk by Dr. David Velasquez, an internal medicine specialist from Cleveland, about health issues in the Hispanic community from 2 to 3 p.m. in the Chestnut Room.
UDance lessons by YSU professor of dance Christine Cobb and her husband, Thom, from 3 to 4 p.m. in the Ohio Room.
USimultaneous showing of movies from Cuba and Puerto Rico in the gallery and the Jones Room, both in Kilcawley, from 2 to 5 p.m.
