BOYS GOLF Ursuline's sectional score best
By carding 78, Newton Falls' T.J. Ross advanced as an individual.
WARREN -- The Ursuline High boys golf team scored 326 points to place first in Monday's Division II sectional golf tournament at Trumbull Country Club.
West Branch placed second with 329 and Southeast was third with 331 in the field of 17 schools.
The top three teams and the top three individuals not on a qualifying team advanced to the district tournament, which will be held at 9 a.m. Tuesday at Windmill Lakes in Ravenna.
The four scores
Sophomore Ryan Spear sparked the Irish underclassmen with a 79. Sophomore Joe Santisi carded 80, while freshmen Jake Detec fired 81 and Paul Cene had 86.
"We had a rough front nine, but the kids packed it in and grided it out on the back nine," said Ursuline coach Michael Murphy.
"The course was set up to identify the three best team and that's what it did," said Murphy.
For West Branch, Joe Vizzuso shot 80, while Chris Rockwell, Randy Crowe and Ben Heverly each shot 83.
For Southeast, Ryan Leifheit shot 77 -- the low round of the tournament -- while Pat Divoky shot 83, Jon Speidel had an 84 and Cody Ellis shot 87.
Newton Falls' T.J. Ross (78), Garfield's Danny O'Brien (80) and Streetsboro's Elijah Jackson (80) advanced as individuals.
