WARREN -- Police are investigating the homicide of a 46-year-old city woman found dead in her home with multiple stab wounds.
Lizette Smith was found by relatives early Sunday morning inside her home at 2528 Kenwood Dr. S.W.
Her husband, Timothy J. Smith, 42, of the same address, was arrested a short time later on charges of reckless operation, driving under suspension and failure to wear a seat belt.
He is also a suspect in the homicide but has not been charged, police said.
Timothy Smith was arrested after his car crashed into the Peerless-Winsmith Inc. building at 1401 W. Market St. He was in the intensive care unit at Forum Health Trumbull Memorial Hospital this morning. Police said they believe Smith is in a coma.
"We will be conferring with the county prosecutor's office this morning before we decide if any additional charges should be filed," said Detective Gary Vingle.
Version of events
Police said Timothy Smith and his wife were arguing and she had asked him to leave the house. Family members told police that they saw Timothy Smith leave the home in his car at a high rate of speed.
When the family members went inside the house, they found that Lizette Smith had been stabbed to death.
An autopsy is scheduled today by the Trumbull County Coroner's office.
Lizette and Timothy Smith were married about two years ago by then-Mayor Hank Angelo at the city hall. Police said a picture of the ceremony was still hanging in the couple's home.
Lizette Smith worked at the Ohio Bureau of Workers' Compensation as a secretary, police said.
Family members and friends are planning a vigil in Lizette Smith's memory for 6 tonight. It will be held in front of Smith's Kenwood home.
