AMERICAN LEAGUE Red Sox delay Yankees' clinching

Boston pounded New York; Texas and Chicago also won.

BOSTON -- The Boston Red Sox blew out the Yankees and made sure New York can't clinch the AL East in Fenway Park.
Manny Ramirez doubled in the tiebreaking run during a seven-run eighth on Saturday night and the Red Sox beat New York 12-5 to preserve their chances of an AL East title. Jason Varitek and Doug Mirabelli each doubled in two runs in the inning.
New York's magic number is four, so victories on Saturday and today would have won the division; instead, Boston cut its deficit to 4 1/2 games and clinched the season series (10-8) against the Yankees for the first time since 2000. The Red Sox lead the AL wild-card race by six games over the Anaheim Angels.
Boston had hoped to sweep the Yankees to propel itself back into the division race. But New York won the series opener on Friday night when they rallied against tiring Red Sox ace Pedro Martinez after manager Terry Francona chose to send him out for the eighth inning.
On Saturday night, Francona wasn't around to see the offensive explosion, having been ejected in the sixth arguing a fan interference call. It was New York manager Joe Torre who left his pitcher in too long. Paul Quantrill (6-3) extinguished a Boston rally in the seventh, then helped fuel one in the eighth, when he was charged with four runs.

Rangers 5, Mariners 4
ARLINGTON, Texas -- Michael Young's tying triple sparked a two-run rally in the seventh inning, and the Texas Rangers again pulled within two games of the AL West lead.
Ichiro Suzuki's two-run single gave him 250 hits, seven shy of George Sisler's 84-year-old major league record with eight games remaining.
Suzuki went 1-for-5 and is batting .374, best in the majors. He tied Rogers Hornsby (1922) and Chuck Klein (1930) for fifth on the single-season hits list. Al Simmons is next with 253 in 1925.
The Rangers, who have won six of seven and 11 of 15, are tied with Anaheim for second place in the AL West -- two games behind Oakland. The Angels beat the Athletics 5-3 earlier Saturday.

CHICAGO -- Mark Buehrle pitched a four-hitter and Jose Valentin hit his 28th homer to lead Chicago.
Carlos Lee also homered for Chicago, which has won six of its last eight games.
Buehrle (15-10) pitched his third complete game of the season, striking out six and walking one. He gave up the lone run on a homer by Joe Randa in the fourth inning.
The left-hander has won 15 or more games in three of his four full seasons in the majors.
Kansas City starter Denny Bautista (0-4) hit Aaron Rowand with a pitch and walked Lee in the sixth. Paul Konerko's RBI single and Ross Gload's run-scoring groundout gave the White Sox a 2-1 lead.
