Trustees fill positions
BOARDMAN -- Township trustees hired three people to fill positions in its road and dispatch departments.
They approved Steven Gresko of North Lima as a custodian in the road department at the rate of $14 an hour; David Wilson of Boardman as a laborer in the road department at the rate of $11.90 an hour; and Johnathan Schmitt of Struthers as a dispatcher at $13.24 an hour.
New hires have 12 months to comply with the township's residency requirement.
Board to meet
YOUNGSTOWN -- The Youngstown Board of Control will have a special meeting at 9:30 a.m. Monday in the city council caucus room in city hall to approve contracts for the Youngstown Convocation Center Project.
Groundbreaking setfor new bridge
CAMPBELL -- A ceremonial groundbreaking for the Walton Avenue bridge is slated for 12:30 p.m. Tuesday at the project site.
When completed, the $4 million bridge will provide access to the 1,400-acre brownfield area known as the Mahoning River Corridor of Opportunity, parts of which lie in Campbell, Struthers and Youngstown.
Funding for the project, which has been in the planning stages for five years, was provided through the Mahoning County Economic Development Fund, Ohio Department of Development, Mahoning County Engineer, Mahoning County Division of Recycling, Ohio Rail Development Commission, Youngstown Community Block Grant, and a special federal grant through U.S. Rep. Tim Ryan of Niles, D-17th.
Dems to meet to fillvacant council seat
YOUNGSTOWN -- A meeting of Democratic precinct committee members to fill the vacant 6th Ward city council seat will be at 10 a.m. Oct. 2 at party headquarters, 101 E. Federal St.
All interested candidates should send a letter by Wednesday to Lisa Antonini, the party chairwoman, P.O. Box 812, Youngstown 44501. Each candidate will have a chance to speak to the 6th Ward precinct committee members, who then will vote on a successor.
Former 6th Ward council member Clarence Boles resigned earlier this month when it was revealed that past felony convictions left him ineligible to hold office.
Work to close bridges
LAKE MILTON -- Two bridges on Newton Falls Road will close shortly for repairs.
Traffic will be detoured around Palmyra Road, state Route 534 and Stoltz Road for about five days, beginning Monday, as Bridge No. 10, just south of Stoltz, is repaired.
Traffic will be detoured around Mahoning Avenue, Route 534 and Stoltz for about five days, beginning Oct. 4, while Bridge No. 11, just north of Stoltz, is repaired.
Computer classes
GIRARD -- Community computer classes are available for Girard residents at Girard High School.
Beginning Monday through Nov. 22, beginners classes will be from 5 to 6:30 and advanced beginners will be from 6:30 to 8 p.m. Mondays.
Excel and Power Point classes will be available from 5 to 7 p.m. Thursdays from Sept. 30 through Nov. 18.
All classes are free. There will be no classes on days when school is canceled.

Alumni band to play
BOARDMAN -- The Boardman Spartan Alumni Band, revived after a six-year dormancy, will play alongside the Spartan Marching Band at the homecoming football game Oct. 1 at Boardman Stadium, with a 4:30 p.m. rehearsal the same day at Boardman High School.

Case is bound over
CAMPBELL -- John J. Mamounis, 24, of Fairview Street was bound over to the Mahoning County grand jury Friday on two counts of carrying a concealed weapon.
Mamounis was arrested Feb. 19 after being accused of leaving the scene of an accident on First Street and leading police on a foot chase. He was carrying two loaded handguns and extra ammunition, police said.
Meeting is canceled
BOARDMAN -- The Boardman Township park board's Monday meeting at 5:30 p.m. has been canceled. It will be rescheduled.
