Mother gets house arrest for DNA test

MEDINA, Ohio (AP) -- A mother will serve 90 days' house arrest for taking another woman's child to a court-ordered DNA test to make it appear her estranged husband wasn't the father.
Kimberlee Pfahl, 37, of Litchfield, pleaded no contest last month to tampering with evidence and was sentenced Friday in Medina County Common Pleas Court. Judge James Kimbler also imposed three years' probation and 24 hours of community service.
Pfahl told Kimbler that she used poor judgment. She said outside court that she was trying to protect her daughter, 2-year-old Sarah, from her husband.
The court has appointed a legal guardian while their custody dispute continues.
Sandy Gregory, the child's baby sitter, testified in a March court hearing that Pfahl offered her $500 if she could find a stand-in for Sarah for the DNA test. Pfahl had two weeks to take the girl to a designated lab.
Gregory knew Pfahl had substituted another girl on the day of the test because she cared for Sarah that day, according to her testimony.
