Man dies after falling between train cars

CLEVELAND (AP) -- A man fell between two cars of a commuter train to the tracks and was killed, but why that happened was unclear.
"We have various witnesses' accounts we are trying to sort out. No one saw the whole thing," said Jerry Masek, spokesman for the Greater Cleveland Regional Transit Authority.
Some witnesses to the accident Thursday at the West 98th Street station speculated that the man was trying to retrieve something he dropped, Masek said.
The man fell to the tracks three feet below the station platform as the eastbound train was pulling out of the station about 3:10 p.m.
"He had paid his fare, so he was supposed to be on the platform," Masek said.
Man's identity
Dr. Heather Raaf, Cuyahoga County chief deputy coroner, said Friday she could not yet release the victim's identity and autopsy results were not available.
The train's driver, whose name was not released, was unaware of the accident and kept going, Masek said.
"Nothing was wrong as far as he knew, and he kept going to the next stop," Masek said Friday.
The driver was taken for blood and alcohol tests, a routine procedure in RTA accidents. Masek said results from those tests are confidential and he could not comment on them.
The route where the accident occurred extends 19 miles from Cleveland Hopkins International Airport on Cleveland's west side to a station in East Cleveland.
