If you go
Mahoosuc Notch: Located on the Appalachian Trail in western Maine in a rugged section of the White Mountains known as the Mahoosuc Range.
Getting there: Day-hikers can reach Mahoosuc Notch by several side trails. According to the Appalachian Mountain Clubs "White Mountain Guide," the easiest access is the Notch Trail, a 2.2-mile trail that ascends to the southwest end of Mahoosuc Notch. It begins on a short spur road that leaves Success Pond Road 10.9 miles from Hutchins St. in Berlin, N.H., and runs to a small parking area.
Tips: Although the hike through the notch is only about a mile, allow at least three hours, one-way. Mahoosuc Notch can be especially hazardous in snow or ice. The best times to hike are generally June through October. Items that the Maine ATC recommends day-hikers carry include a map and compass, two to three quarts of water, warm clothing and rain gear, food (including extra-high energy snacks), first-aid kit and whistle.
