Infant boy found dead
GIRARD -- A 6-month-old boy was found dead about 8:10 a.m. Saturday in a reclining chair where he had slept with his mother Friday night at a home on Woodlawn Avenue. Police said the child appeared to have been dead for several hours. The death is under investigation by Girard police detectives and the Trumbull County coroner. According to police, the boy's mother, of Boardman, had an argument with her boyfriend, who is the child's father, and went to Girard to spend the night with a friend. When the child's mother left for work about 7:45 a.m. Saturday, she did not notice her son was dead. He was discovered about 25 minutes later by another person in the house, police said.

Zoo attempts breeding
PITTSBURGH (AP) -- The Pittsburgh Zoo and PPG Aquarium is trying to successfully breed an elephant for the third time in five years, and officials are confident they'll succeed.
The reason for their confidence: a male elephant named Jackson, the only naturally breeding bull elephant in the nation. Jackson has sired the zoo's two calves and recently returned to the zoo from a stud tour of Disney's Animal Kingdom in Orlando, Fla. where he mated with several elephant cows, producing at least one calf.
On Friday, Jackson was mated with a cow named Nan. He is the father of two baby elephants at the Pittsburgh Zoo: Victoria, born in September 1999, and Callee, born in September 2000.
Blood tests will be performed in about 12 weeks to determine if Nan is pregnant. If the test is positive, she would be expected to deliver in another 20 to 22 months.
