Defending champions down Manchester City
LONDON (AP) -- Defending champion Arsenal stretched its unbeaten record in the Premier League to 47 games, winning 1-0 at Manchester City on Saturday on a rare goal by Ashley Cole.
Cole took a deflected pass from Jose Antonio Reyes and scored with a left-footed shot in the 13th minute, his first goal in more than two years.
Chelsea won 1-0 at Middlesbrough on a goal by Didier Drogba with nine minutes left. Chelsea appeared to be headed for its third straight 0-0 tie in the league before the 15-yard shot off a free kick from Frank Lampard.
Manchester United scored a 1-0 victory at Tottenham, with Ruud van Nistelrooy making a penalty kick three minutes before halftime.
Bolton and Birmingham played to a 1-1 tie. Radhi Jaidi struck with a half-volley for Bolton in the 16th minute, but Muzzy Izzet evened the score four minutes after halftime.
Arsenal leads the league with 19 points after seven games, followed by Chelsea with 17. Everton, which visits Portsmouth on Sunday, is third with 13. United, which has been steadily moving up, and Bolton have 12 each.
Newcastle, which fired Bobby Robson three weeks ago and replaced him with Graeme Souness, follows with 11 points. It beat struggling West Bromwich Albion 3-1 for its third win in a row under the new manager.
Last-place Crystal Palace, which was promoted through the playoffs, produced the surprise result of the day, a 1-1 tie at seventh-place Aston Villa.
