MINERAL RIDGE -- One person was injured in a one-car crash about 7:30 p.m. Saturday on Salt Springs Road near Four-Mile-Run Road. The Ohio Highway State Patrol said the injured person was thrown from the vehicle when it rolled over, and was taken to St. Elizabeth Health Center for treatment. Further details, including the identity of the injured person, were not available at press time.
Infant boy found dead
GIRARD -- A 6-month-old boy was found dead at 8:10 a.m. Saturday in a recliner where he had slept with his mother Friday night at a home on Woodlawn Avenue. Police said the child appeared to have been dead for several hours. The death is under investigation by city police detectives and the Trumbull County coroner. According to police, the boy's mother, of Boardman, had an argument with her boyfriend, who is the child's father, and went to Girard to spend the night with a friend. When the child's mother left for work about 7:45 a.m. Saturday, she did not notice her son was dead. He was discovered about 25 minutes later by another person in the house, police said.
Library's fall book sale
HUBBARD -- The Hubbard Public Library will have its annual fall book sale from Wednesday to Saturday. A preview sale will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday. Tickets are $5 at the door for the preview only, and members of the Friends of the Library will be admitted free. Doors are open from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. Thursday, Friday and Saturday. There will be a $2-per-bargain-bag sale Saturday. Books, tapes, videos and CDs will be on sale. Children's book and paperback will be 25 cents; hardcover books, $1. Used printers and computers will be sold for less than $5. All proceeds benefit the library. Donations of used books in clean salable condition will be accepted during the sale.
Wildlife-friendly yards
CANFIELD -- The public is welcome when Ellen Speicher, assistant horticulture director at Fellows Riverside Gardens, presents a program on "Creating a Wildlife-Friendly Yard: From Planning to Planting," at the Audubon Society of Mahoning Valley meeting. The society meets at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday at the MetroParks Farm on state Route 46.
Tamburitzans to perform
ELLWOOD CITY, Pa. -- The Duquesne University Tamburitzans will perform at 7:30 p.m. Saturday in Lincoln High School Auditorium, Crescent Avenue. The concert is sponsored by the Ellwood City Area Civic Chorale to benefit their 50th anniversary performance trip to the Magic Kingdom at Walt Disney World, Orlando, Fla. Tickets bought in advance are $15 for adults and $12.50 for children under the age of 10. All seats will be $17 on the night of the performance. Christmas assistance
YOUNGSTOWN -- Applications for the 2004 Christmas assistance provided by the Salvation Army and the Marine Corps Reserve Toys for Tots program are available at the Salvation Army, 1501 Glenwood Ave., from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Oct. 12-14; from noon to 6 p.m. Oct. 15; and 9 a.m. to noon Oct. 16. Applicants must present a valid photo ID, Social Security cards for all household members, proof of guardianship of all children in the household, and proof of household income, which may not exceed 150 percent of the federal poverty guidelines. Giant-pumpkin contest
CANFIELD -- The Ohio Valley Giant Pumpkin Growers' 10th annual weigh-off is set for 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday at Parks Garden Center, 9010 state Route 62. Those entering the contest must be at the garden center by 9 a.m. Prizes of at least $6,500 are expected to be given out for the heaviest types of pumpkins, squash, watermelons, tomatoes and field pumpkins, as well as the longest gourd.
