MERCER, Pa. -- Mercer County commissioners awarded a contract Thursday to Shingledecker's Welding Inc., Franklin, for emergency replacement of a small bridge on Sugar Run Road, Greene Township. Flooding from storms last month damaged the bridge, which remains closed.
County Engineer Mark Miller said his office asked three companies for quotes, and two were submitted. Shingledecker's offer to do the job for $9,269 was the lower of the two. He said once the contractor orders materials, construction will take one week.
Homemaker services
Also Thursday, commissioners approved a contract with Family Care for Children Inc., Lewisburg, to provide homemaker services in Mercer County for $131,334. The services are for clients of Children & amp; Youth Services and are designed to teach skills and values to lessen the need for future out-of-home placements of children, officials said.
Commissioners also accepted $8,750 from the Federal Emergency Management Agency for weather radios to be distributed to day-care centers, police and fire stations, nursing homes, and other institutions.
They also hired William Miller of Mercer as part-time custodian to replace an employee who resigned. He will be paid $9.15 per hour.
Anna McCandless of Lake Township was honored with a proclamation for being named 2004 Union Woman of the Year by the Pennsylvania Labor History Society.
