Many high school football running backs would consider seven touchdowns to be a good season. For Eric D'Carrion of Berlin Brothersvalley, seven touchdowns represented one exceptional game.
DCarrion, a 5-foot-9, 175-pound senior, scored seven touchdowns and ran for 276 yards in a 49-42 victory against Portage. He had scoring runs of 1 and 2 yards but the other five were 30 yards or more, including a 68-yarder.
"That was one of those cases were I had no idea he had that many scores and that much yardage until after the game," Berlin Brothersvalley coach Doug Paul said. "But it wasn't a fluke. He had a big year for us last season."
D'Carrion rushed for 1,562 yards on 21 carries and scored 17 touchdowns as a junior. So far this year, he has 695 yards on 58 carries and 14 touchdowns. Berlin Brothersvalley, a Class A school in PIAA District 5, is 3-0.
The seven touchdowns in a game is a school record, but not a state mark. The uncertified state record is thought to be eight by Midland's Ben Harriel.
Berlin Brothersvalley uses a wishbone offense, which is primarily a running attack. It helped that all the starting offensive linemen returning from last season.
"That isn't to take anything away from Eric. He did a great job," Paul said. "But so did the line and we've been running the ball well. Through the first three games we have 1,200 yards of offense and most of that is on the ground."
D'Carrion has been timed at 4.45 seconds in the 40-yard dash.
"He's a nice combination," Paul said. "He's got the breakaway speed, but there were a couple of runs where he broke tackles and was dragging people with him."
D'Carrion has received interest from Florida Atlantic and Marshall and most of the Division II Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference has checked in on him.
"Most of them want him for defense," Paul said. "But he's a tough runner."
Cleared to compete
Liz Kearins, a PIAA gold medalist as a freshman, has been cleared to run at Gwynedd-Mercy Academy.
A District 1 committee decided by an 18-1 vote that Kearins' transfer from Central Bucks West to Gwynedd was not for athletic reasons.
Kearins was the PIAA Class AAA 800-meter champion last spring after finishing third in the PIAA cross country meet last fall.
Gwynedd is the four-time defending District 1 Class AA cross country champion.
