AROUND THE HORN Friday's other games
AMERICAN LEAGUE
Yankees 6, Red Sox 4
BOSTON -- Those Red Sox managers just never learn. With an eerie similarity to last year's postseason debacle, Pedro Martinez took a lead into the eighth inning before tiring and the New York Yankees rallied past Boston to open a 5 1/2-game advantage in the AL East. Grady Little was the Red Sox manager last fall when he left Martinez in during the eighth inning of Game 7 in the AL championship series; the Yankees overcame a 5-2 deficit to tie it and earned a World Series berth when Aaron Boone homered in the 11th.
Orioles 7, Tigers 5
BALTIMORE -- Miguel Tejada hit a game-winning three-run homer in the bottom of the ninth inning to lead the Baltimore Orioles to victory over the Detroit Tigers. Tejada, who went 4-for-5 with four RBIs, hit a 1-0 pitch from Esteban Yan over the center- field wall for his 31st homer and Baltimore's fourth walk-off win of the season.
Devil Rays 4, Blue Jays 2
ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. -- Aubrey Huff hit his 29th homer and Mark Hendrickson pitched seven solid innings, leading the Tampa Bay Devil Rays past the Toronto Blue Jays. Julio Lugo broke a 2-all tie with a two-run single in the sixth for Tampa Bay, which leads Toronto by 1 1/2 games for fourth place in the AL East. The Devil Rays have finished last in all six years of the team's existence.
Royals 8, White Sox 6
CHICAGO -- John Buck homered twice to lead the Kansas City Royals to a win over the Chicago White Sox. Buck broke a 4-4 tie in the sixth with a 431-foot solo shot to center off reliever Felix Diaz for his first career multihomer game. He went 3-for-4 and is 15-for-34 with five home runs in his last eight games.
Mariners 8, Rangers 7
ARLINGTON, Texas -- Ichiro Suzuki had two more hits to move within eight of George Sisler's major league record, and Randy Winn's infield single in the ninth helped the Seattle Mariners end the Texas Rangers' five-game winning streak with a victory. The Rangers started the night tied for second in the AL West with the Anaheim Angels.
NATIONAL LEAGUE
Braves 8, Marlins 7
ATLANTA -- The Atlanta Braves clinched their 13th consecutive division title, winning the NL East with a victory over the Florida Marlins. Marcus Giles' go-ahead single capped Atlanta's three-run rally in the eighth inning. The Braves' record streak of division championships began with the 1991 NL West title and excludes the 1994 strike-shortened season.
Cubs 2, Mets 1, 10 innings
NEW YORK -- Derrek Lee hit an RBI single in the 10th inning and Aramis Ramirez homered in the seventh, leading the Chicago Cubs to victory over the New York Mets. The Cubs won their fourth straight and 13th in 16 games to maintain their lead in the NL wild-card race. They began the day a half-game ahead of the San Francisco Giants, who hosted Los Angeles later Friday night.
Cardinals 5, Rockies 4
DENVER -- Albert Pujols homered, Jeff Suppan improved to 10-0 on the road and the St. Louis Cardinals made a winner of Larry Walker in his return to Colorado by beating the Rockies. Edgar Renteria had three RBIs to lead the Cardinals' offense. Walker went 0-for-4 in his first game back at Coors Field since the Rockies traded him to St. Louis on Aug. 6.
Expos 8, Phillies 1
MONTREAL -- Sun Woo-Kim came within an out of his first career complete game and shutout and also hit a two-run double in the Montreal Expos' victory over the Philadelphia Phillies. Kim (4-5) allowed seven hits and one run in 8 2-3 innings -- his longest outing in 26 career starts. He lost his shutout bid on Jason Michaels' RBI double in the ninth.
Astros 1, Brewers 0
MILWAUKEE -- Craig Biggio's sacrifice fly in the top of the 10th inning lifted the Houston Astros to victory over the Milwaukee Brewers. The Astros remained 2 1/2 games behind the Chicago Cubs, who beat the New York Mets, in the NL wild-card race. Roger Clemens was denied his 19th victory and took a no-decision, but struck out a season-high 12 to surpass 200 for the 12th time in his career.
