LORDSTOWN -- Trumbull Community Action Program and the Trumbull Career and Technical Center Adult Training Center will have a women's health event from 8:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Friday at the TCTC Adult Training Center, Salt Springs Road.
Transportation will leave from TCAP hourly beginning at 8:30 a.m. Child care will be provided at the training center.
Participants will learn about the services available to women in the county including massage therapy, yoga, pregnancy-related services and prevention of domestic violence.
Funding and support is being provided by sexual assault and domestic violence prevention program, Ohio Department of Health's Bureau of Health Promotion and Risk Reduction, area health education enters of Northeastern Ohio Universities College of Medicine.
Home buyer's workshop
WARREN -- A free first-time home buyer's workshop will be conducted from noon to 2 p.m. Saturday at Hoyt Street Church of God in Christ, 789 Hoyt St. S.W.
The event is being presented by the Marcus Garvey Institute of Awareness-Community Tennis Association, First Place Bank and Bank One-Chase Home Mortgage.
Topics of discussion include the importance of a good credit report, the amount of debt allowable to purchase a house and advantages of loan preapproval.
Youth with knife in school
WARREN -- A 16-year-old boy was arrested for bringing a knife to school.
According to police reports, the boy was found with the knife at Harding High School around 7:30 a.m. Wednesday. He was released to a parent, reports state.
Forum on library issues
WARREN -- The public libraries of Ashtabula and Trumbull counties are jointly hosting a forum on library issues at 7 p.m. Oct. 4 at the main branch of the Warren-Trumbull County Public Library.
Local candidates for seats in the Ohio Senate and House of Representatives will give brief statements and respond to written questions from the audience.
The event is free and open to the public.
Suit in woman's death
YOUNGSTOWN -- The mother of a slain East Philadelphia Avenue woman is suing the man accused of the death.
The lawsuit, filed in Mahoning County Common Pleas Court by Theresa E. Johnson of Warren, seeks unspecified damages from Edward C. Anderson. It says Anderson, 58, is responsible for the July 15 death of 32-year-old Mary M. Thompson, who lived with Anderson.
Anderson is under indictment in Thompson's slaying and is in the Mahoning County Jail awaiting trial. He has pleaded innocent.
The suit seeks damages for the pain and suffering of Thompson's parents and her two children. It is assigned to Judge James C. Evans.
Probation for child sex
YOUNGSTOWN -- Prosecutors are recommending probation for Kevin A. Haney, 29, of Gladys Street, Hubbard, who pleaded guilty Wednesday in Mahoning County Common Pleas Court to gross sexual imposition.
Haney is accused of engaging in sexual conduct with a 12-year-old girl at a home on Cooper Street, Youngstown, in February. The girl was a daughter of one of Haney's friends.
Judge Maureen A. Sweeney allowed Haney to remain free pending sentencing, which has not been scheduled.
Democratic rally in Sharon
SHARON, Pa. -- Carol Moseley Braun, a former 2004 presidential candidate, will have a Democratic political rally at 2 p.m. Friday at the Sharon Municipal Building on Connelly Boulevard.
Braun is stumping for presidential hopeful John Kerry and his vice presidential running mate, John Edwards.
Braun was a U.S. senator from 1992 to 1998 and a U.S. ambassador to New Zealand from 1999 to 2001.
She will address the need to create and retain good-paying jobs as well as economic reforms outlined in the Democratic Party platform.
