Governor sets execution
HARRISBURG (AP) -- Gov. Ed Rendell signed a death warrant Wednesday for a New Castle man twice convicted of killing a store clerk in an Allegheny County robbery.
Salvador Carlos Santiago, 41, was first convicted in 1986 of killing Patrick Huber, then won a new trial and was convicted again in 1993.
Santiago's execution was scheduled for Nov. 10. He is incarcerated at the State Correctional Institution in Greene County. He also is serving a life sentence for the murder of a Butler man in Lawrence County two days before the Huber slaying.
Rendell has signed 24 death warrants in nearly two years in office. Three executions have been carried out in the state since 1975, most recently in July 1999.
Illegal immigrants on I-80
MERCER, PA. -- State police said they picked up 17 more illegal Mexican immigrants on Interstate 80.
Police said they stopped a vehicle in Findley Township around 8:30 a.m. Wednesday and found 15 adults ranging in age from 18 to 40 and two children ages 3 and 6 months inside.
None of them could provide acceptable evidence that they are in the United States legally, police said. All were turned over to federal immigration agents.
Sentenced for DUI
YOUNGSTOWN -- Bobbie Jo Hartline, 36, of South Webb Avenue, Alliance, was sentenced to one year in prison Wednesday in Mahoning County Common Pleas Court for driving under the influence of alcohol.
She was arrested in August 2003 in Smith Township and pleaded guilty in July 2004. According to court records, it was Hartline's fifth DUI conviction in the past six years.
Judge R. Scott Krichbaum also fined Hartline $800 and suspended her driver's license for the rest of her life.
Democratic rally in Sharon
SHARON, Pa. -- Carol Moseley Braun, a former 2004 presidential candidate, will have a Democratic political rally at 2 p.m. Friday at the Sharon Municipal Building on Connelly Boulevard. Braun is stumping for presidential hopeful John Kerry and his vice presidential running mate, John Edwards.
Braun was a U.S. senator from 1992 to 1998 and a U.S. ambassador to New Zealand from 1999 to 2001. She will address the need to create and retain good-paying jobs as well as economic reforms outlined in the Democratic Party platform.
Quilt show scheduled
CLARKS MILLS, Pa. -- The IQ Quilt club will have its 25th anniversary quilt show, "Reflections," from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday at the New Vernon Grange on Goddard Park Road off Pa. Route 358 in Mercer County.
Admission is $2, and proceeds from the event go to needy families in the community.
The quilts of Cindy Briggs, a member of the group, will be showcased. There will be demonstrations, a country store and vendors, and lunch will be available.
McConnell's Mill festival
PORTERSVILLE, Pa. -- McConnell's Mill State Park's 12th annual Heritage Festival continues from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Sunday at the Kildoo picnic area.
The festival celebrates the operational era of the Old Mill from 1852 to 1928. Activities and events include a Civil War re-enactment, a spinner, spoon maker and other artists and craftsmen. Other offerings include historical presentations, musical entertainment, grist mill tours and corn-grinding demonstrations.
Admission and parking are free. The mill will close for the season Monday.
Recycling drive set
COLUMBIANA -- Items including old computer equipment can be recycled during Crestview biology students' recycling drive, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. next Thursday at Crestview High.
Computer equipment is recycled for the various plastic parts, students said. Other items collected include newspapers, magazines, phone books, paperback books, hard-cover books including textbooks, catalogs, junk mail, school and office paper, cardboard of all types, clean aluminum cans and copper.
