hSweets for the sweet
Sweet Baby Jays kettle-cooked sweet potato chips scored big with Chicago Tribune tasters. The thick chips are pleasantly squishy with an ever-so-sweet flavor. They liked the unsalted as well as the spicier mesquite variety. The chips are lower in calories (90 per about 12 chips) and carbs (5-6 grams per ounce) than regular potato chips, and have a large amount of vitamin A. Each 81/2-ounce bag costs $2.25 to $3.30 at grocery stores.
Quick Indian cuisine
Amy's frozen organic vegetarian Indian entrees, if not capturing the authentic flavor of an Indian meal, will fill in fine as a reasonable facsimile. The mattar paneer dinner boasts a paneer of curried peas and whole milk cheese in a mild sauce, chana masala (chick-peas and tomatoes) and basmati rice. Palak paneer has plain rice, a paneer of spinach and whole-milk cheese, and rajmah dal (kidney beans in a spicy ginger-garlic sauce). Each 10-ounce package is $3.70-$4.30 in the freezer case at select grocery stores.
hBlue hue
CT testers love the serene hue of the Ocean Blue stoneware from CorningWare Colours. The bakeware is blue on the outside, and a creamy white on the inside; mixing bowls, also available, reverse the scheme.
These sturdy and versatile pieces are microwave-, dishwasher-, oven- and freezer-safe. A five-piece bakeware set (11/2-quart round dish with cover, 13-by-9-inch baking dish and two 7-ounce ramekins) costs $50, and a three-piece set of nesting bowls (1-, 2- and 3-quart) is $40 at Target.
A breed apart
Heritage Foods USA, best known for its sales of heritage turkeys at Thanksgiving, has expanded its offerings in an effort to save fast-disappearing native breeds of lamb and pigs: Purebred Katahdin lamb from farms in Tennessee, Arkansas, Kentucky and Oklahoma, and purebred Berkshire pork from a coalition of farms led by Metzger Farm in Kansas, are among the initial offerings. Half a lamb or pig cut into its respective pieces found at the supermarket will be sold for $225 and $400, respectively, excluding shipping (about $30-$60).
