Gimenez, Reyes, Butia chosen all-stars; Hlebovy is top reliever
NILES -- Three members of the Mahoning Valley Scrappers were selected to the New York-Penn League all-star team.
The Scrappers defeated the Tri-City ValleyCats to win the NYPL title last week.
Infielder Chris Gimenez, outfielder Argenis Reyes and designated hitter Mike Butia were honored by the league, which selected 16 players to the all-star squad.
The Brooklyn Cyclones and the ValleyCats also had three selections to the all-star team.
Tri-City pitcher Ronnie Martinez was picked the league MVP.
Gimenez led the league in doubles (23), slugging percentage (.527) and extra-base hits (36).
He was second in on-base percentage (.419), tied for fourth in home runs (10) and sixth in hits (78).
Reyes led the league in hits (101) and runs scored (53). He was fourth in stolen bases (27) and fifth in batting (.312).
Butia placed fourth in batting average (.315), fourth in on-base percentage (.396) and was ninth in RBIs (44).
Gus Hlebovy, a graduate of Campbell Memorial High who pitched with the Vermont Expos, was named the winner of the Rolaids Relief Man Award. He was 3-1 with a 4.32 ERA and a league-leading 16 saves.
