Bond set for suspect in execution-style killings

COLUMBUS (AP) -- Bond was set at $3 million Monday for a man charged in the execution-style killings a year ago of three people at a house near the Ohio State University campus.
Vernon Spence Jr., 30, of Columbus, is charged with three counts of aggravated murder. He appeared in Franklin County Municipal Court on Monday morning, but did not enter a plea.
Police only will say Spence's arrest Saturday night came from tips and information left at the house where the bodies were found in July 2003.
Two other suspects have been arrested separately on unrelated federal charges. Police have not identified them.
Neighbors told police they heard shots, then saw two men running through the alley behind the house.
At the time of the killings, police and relatives said they suspected drugs may have been involved, but Franklin County Prosecutor Ron O'Brien said Monday that he did not think the killings were over a drug deal. He would not discuss a motive, and police have not released one.
Spence is charged in the deaths of Kayla Hurst, 21, of Granville; her boyfriend, Aaron Grexa, 23, of Greensburg, Pa.; and Eric Hlass, 22, of Russellville, Ark.
O'Brien said the case could go to a grand jury this week or next week.
