SALEM -- Two property owners on South Broadway Avenue told police Sunday morning that their buildings had been vandalized. A 5-foot-by-8-foot window was smashed at 176 S. Broadway Ave. Someone bent the metal of the awning at Bruce's Place, 166 S. Broadway Ave. Police helped the owner bend it out of the way of customers. There was no dollar estimate of the damage.
2 state grants awarded
HARRISBURG -- State Sen. Bob Robbins of Greenville, Pa., R-20th, announced today the awarding of two state grants. Robbins said Mercer County will receive $28,291 from the state Recycling Coordinate Grant Program. The grant will be used to reimburse Mercer County for 50 percent of the county recycling coordinator's salary and expenses. In addition, Wilmington Township has been awarded $424 through the state Sewage Facilities Enforcement Grant Program. The funds will be used to reimburse Wilmington Township for 50 percent of the eligible expenses of enforcing state sewage standards.
Shots fired at officers
YOUNGSTOWN -- Someone fired at least two shots at police officers making a traffic stop on the North Side early Sunday, though nobody was hit. Police were responding to a call just before 2 a.m. on Lora Avenue about gunfire coming from a party where there were a number of teenagers. Officers heard several shots when they arrived and stopped a vehicle nearby with six people in it. Officers said that during the stop they heard at least two shots whistle past them from behind, hitting a tree. A woman at a Lora Avenue home later told police a 17-year-old youth fired a gun in the house near several other people, then fired shots at the officers from the porch.
Cosmetology services
CANFIELD -- The senior cosmetology class at Mahoning County Career & amp; Technical Center, 7300 N. Palmyra Road, will begin accepting customers Wednesday. The MCCTC salon will be open to the public from noon to 2:20 p.m. Tuesdays and Fridays during the school year. Appointments are required, and may be made by calling the beauty salon at (330) 729-4000, Ext. 1708. All work is done under the licensed supervision of Linda Tomko, cosmetology instructor. The salon will offer these services: wet sets, blow dry/curling iron styling, perms, relaxers, hair coloring and highlighting/low lights, hair removal, manicures and facials. Fees are based on the services provided.
Boy Scout food drive
LISBON -- The Sandy Beaver District of the Boy Scouts of America's Buckeye Council launched a food drive Saturday to benefit the victims of recent flooding. All donated items will be given to the Open Door/Way Station in Lisbon. Members of the 80 units in the district delivered marked bags to homes and businesses. People are asked to share canned goods and paper products. The bags will be collected next Saturday.
Beaver Twp. pavilions
NORTH LIMA -- The Beaver Township Park Board has issued a reminder that all park pavilions in the township will close at the end of October. The pavilions may be rented through Oct. 31, pending availability.
