Help for flood victims
Members of the American Legion, its Auxiliary and the Sons of the American Legion affected by the recent flooding may be eligible for financial assistance through the Legion's National Emergency Fund. For more information, contact a local American Legion post, visit the Web site www.ohioamericanlegion.org, or call (740) 362-7478.
Applications for assistance must be received within 90 days of the disaster, which must be a natural disaster as declared by federal, state or local government authorities. Supporting data (photos, repair estimates, etc.) should be included with the application if possible or statements from post, district or department officers attesting to damages.
HONORS
Revetti receives awards
Army Pfc. Joseph Revetti, son of Tony and Larene Revetti of Austintown, received the Sergeant Major Achievement, Headquarters Achievement and Warrior Forge 2004 Leadership Excellence awards for his efforts in training Reserve Officer Training Corps candidates at Fort Lewis, Wash., from May to July 2004.
Revetti, a 1998 graduate of Austintown Fitch High School, has received specialized training in advanced field artillery tactical/data systems and desert warfare, and has been training National Guard units on how to escort VIPs in Iraq. He is stationed at Fort Sill, Okla., where he completed basic training in 2003.
ADVANCED TRAINING
Carson graduates
Army 2nd Lt. Jeffrey Lawrence Carson, son of Roseanne Carson of Lowellville, has graduated from Officer Candidate School at Fort McClellan, Ala., and is scheduled for 5 1/2 months of additional training at the Army's Intelligence Center, Fort Huachuca, Ariz. Carson is the battalion intelligence officer for the 1-148 Infantry located in Lima.
Carson, a 1995 graduate of Lowellville High School, received a bachelor of arts degree from Ohio State University, is completing his master's degree and has applied for admittance into a doctoral program.

Navy: Seaman Apprentice Samuel A. Montalvo (Austintown Fitch High School, '03), son of Griselle Muller of Oviedo, Fla., and Robert Montalvo of Austintown; Airman Apprentice Kris A. Maylone (Champion High School, '04), son of Stephanie A. and Richard A. Maylone of Warren.
MISCELLANEOUS
Support-group fund-raiser
The Family Support Group of "C" Co. of the National Guard's 216th Engineering Battalion, which has about 130 soldiers in Iraq, is having a spaghetti dinner fund-raiser from 5 to 7 p.m. next Sunday at the National Guard Armory, 875 Victoria Road, Austintown. Members of the 216th were sent to Iraq in January and are expected home next spring.
Advance-sale tickets for the dinner are $5 for adults and $4 for children under 14 and seniors. Tickets at the door are $6 for adults and $5 for children and seniors.
In addition to the dinner, the support group is selling car magnets and cookbooks for $5 and $6 respectively, and is having a Chinese auction, all to raise money to send care packages to the troops and arrange morale-booster events for the families left behind.

'Operation Uplink' donor
State Farm, in conjunction with Life Awareness Month, will make a monetary donation to "Operation Uplink" for each life insurance application produced by State Farm agents in Ohio, Kentucky and Tennessee from Sept. 1 through Oct. 31.
"Operation Uplink" is a nonprofit program that provides free prepaid phone cards to military personnel and hospitalized veterans to keep in touch with their families while they are overseas. A majority of phone cards will be distributed to those serving in Iraq and Afghanistan.
The phone cards will be given to service men and women in time to help them keep in touch with loved ones over the holidays, said Lee Baumann, senior vice president of State Farm's Mid-American Zone.
