YOUNGSTOWN -- An evening of entertainment is being planned as fund-raiser for the Cookie Pesce Scholarship Fund at Ursuline High School. The event will benefit performing-arts students.
"Calling Down the Gods," featuring dance, music, poetry and film, will be Saturday at Cedars Lounge on Hazel Street, downtown, at 9 p.m. Admission is $7. Entertainers include poets Billy Knighthawk and Frank Polite; musicians Obie Savage and Teddy Pantelas, Sonny, Kelly Connors and Sarah Terlecki.
Cookie Pesce, who died last spring, directed and choreographed plays at Ursuline, and taught dance for 30 years.
Chandler works featured
WARREN -- Warren-Trumbull County Public Library, 443 Mahoning Ave. N.W., will host a weekend of movies and programs based on the writings of legendary detective novelist Raymond Chandler on Saturday and next Sunday.
Scheduled are the following films and speakers:
USaturday morning: "Murder, My Sweet" and "The Blue Dahlia." At 2 p.m., Dr. Stephanie Tingley of Youngstown State University will speak on "Double Indemnity" before its showing.
USunday: At 1:30 p.m., Professor Linda Bourassa of Hiram College Art Department will speak on "The Inscrutable Big Sleep" before the showing at 2:30.

'Play About the Baby'
YOUNGSTOWN -- "The Play About the Baby," by Pulitzer Prize-winning playwright Edward Albee, will be performed by Actors' Project of Youngstown at 8 p.m. Friday and Saturday and at 3 p.m. next Sunday in YSU's McDonough Museum of Art, Wick Avenue.
The play contains adult language.
Admission is free, but donations will be accepted.

Jazz quintet to perform
GREENVILLE, Pa. -- Pittsburgh jazz quintet R.H. Factor, featuring percussionist Roger Humphries, will perform at Holy Trinity Lutheran Church, Penn Avenue and Clinton Street next Sunday at 3:30 p.m.
Humphries has worked with Ray Charles, Stanley Turrentine, Dizzy Gillespie, George Benson and others.

Christmas Spectacular
NEW CASTLE, Pa. -- Get a jump on your Christmas shopping.
The Pittsburgh North Arts and Crafts Christmas Spectacular will be Friday through next Sunday from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. each day at the Lawrence County Fairgrounds. More than 120 booths of artists, craftsmen and food vendors will display their finest creations. The fairgrounds are on Pa. Route 108 across from Laurel High School. Admission is $5 for adults, $4.50 for senior citizens and $1 for children.

Ballroom-dance event
YOUNGSTOWN -- Chaney High School's Ballroom Dance Team will help celebrate National Ballroom Week on Saturday at Eastwood Mall in Niles from 2 to 5 p.m.
The local chapter of U.S. Amateur Ballroom Dancers Association established the Chaney team this year. The Chaney dancers will join USABDA performers at the Eastwood Mall event.
'Neighborhoods' exhibit
YOUNGSTOWN -- Everyday life in the Mahoning Valley is reflected in "Neighborhoods: Where Our People Live," a photo exhibit that will open this month in Rose Marie Smith Gallery at Youngstown State University Tod Hall, second floor.
A reception will be from 5 to 7 p.m. Tuesday.
The photos were submitted in the first CityScapes contest that was sponsored by YSU and Youngstown/Warren Regional Chamber. The photos will be on display indefinitely. Hours are from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. weekdays.
Artwork on display
BOARDMAN -- Watercolor paintings by Patrick A. Russo and pastel and pencil portraits by N.F. Mohney will be on display from 4 to 8 p.m. Oct. 2 and from noon to 6 p.m. Oct. 3 at Fantastic Fitness Inc., 8260 Market St., south of Southern Park Mall.
Most works will be for sale. Russo will show his work at Butler Institute of American Art's holiday fine arts show in December.
Mohney is available for commission work.
