Bittersweet
Monroeville coach Steve Ringholz collected career win 200 Friday in a 42-20 victory over Seneca East. But the milestone was dampened for the 27-year coaching veteran when it was learned one of his former players -- Jason Sparks, a 2003 graduate -- had been killed in Iraq.
Streaking
For the third time in four years, Tiffin Columbian returned the season's opening kickoff for a touchdown, Justin Reinbolt going 99 yards in a 42-0 win over Toledo Whitmer; Warren Harding pushed its regular-season win streak to 24 games and its home field string to 30; defending Div. I state champ Cincinnati Elder led 50-0 at the half in beating Western Hills 64-6, the biggest margin ever in a series dating to 1929; Maria Stein Marion Local, with three state championship appearances in four years, is 0-3 after coach Tim Goodwin entered the year with a career mark of 60-12; and Dola Hardin Northern scored 41 points in the second quarter and 71 in the opening half of a 78-7 win over Vanlue Friday.

Noteworthy
Delphos St. John's and Rockford Parkway combined for 23 penalties accounting for 222 yards in St. John's 42-6 win; New Philadelphia's Arthur Zurcher kicked a school record 46-yard field goal in a 38-7 win over Cleveland Collinwood; and North Baltimore beat Holgate 8-0 in a game in which nine passes were intercepted.
Finally, it's the season for fresh starts.
Bowerston Conotton Valley lost to Newcomerstown 98-0 during the 2000 season. From 2000 through last year, the Rockets won a total of three games.
Yet Conotton Valley, behind running back Morgan Lloyd who has scored 11 touchdowns, is a perfect 3-0 for the first time since 1995.
