Mooney captures Niles event



South Range's boys finished second at the Malone College Invitational.
NILES -- The Cardinal Mooney High boys cross country team placed four runners in the top 10 Saturday as the Cardinals won the 10th annual Niles Invitational.
Mooney (29 points) captured the first two places, with Colin Durina (17:12) winning the meet and Noah Brak (17:33) finishing runner-up.
The Cardinals also got strong performances from Sean Finnerty (fifth in 18:02) and Brian Stevens (seventh in 18:07).
Ashtabula Lakeside (51) was the runner-up.
In the girls race, Lakeside (30) won the team competition, while Akron Hoban's Maura Bulgrin (20:44) finished first.
Mooney was runner-up with 72 points, and the top area finisher was Bristol's Jen Armour (sixth, 21:08).
Malone College Invitational
CANTON -- The South Range boys had two runners finish in the top 10 as the Raiders finished second in the Div. III meet with 116 points.
Dan Nemergut placed third in 17:13 while teammate Doug Miller was seventh in 18:08. Ridgewood's Christopher Olinger placed first in 16:39 as his team also captured Div. III honors with 103 points.
In Div. II, Salem finished sixth (194) and Struthers eighth (208) in the meet won by Field (113). Boardman finished 16th (483) and Canfield 30th (826) in the Div. I meet.
On the girls side, Salem had the area's best representation with a third-place finish (178) in Div. II, behind champion CVCA (108) and Minerva (139). The Quakers' Deirdre Clary was sixth (20:53) and Liz Shavers seventh (20:55).
South Range was fifth (196) in Div. III, and Leetonia's Melissa Dipanfilo placed sixth (21:44). In Div. I, Canfield placed 16th (411).
Lordstown Invitational
LORDSTOWN -- LaBrae sophomore Peggy Nichols and Lordstown senior Tom Andriko were individuals winners of the sixth annual Lordstown Invitational.
Nichols (22:34) was top finisher for a second straight year. Andriko won by over a minute, in 17:47, in what was likely his final competition on his home course.
Lordstown's boys won the team scoring for a second consecutive year. Mineral Ridge swept the girls competition with 46 points.
