ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- Braylon Edwards caught eight passes for 130 yards and two touchdowns, including the game-winner in the third quarter, to lead No. 17 Michigan past San Diego State 24-21 on Saturday.
The Wolverines (2-1) bounced back after last week's loss at Notre Dame, but it wasn't easy.
The Aztecs (1-1), who entered the game three-touchdown underdogs, forced four turnovers and missed two fourth-quarter field goals that could have tied the game.
Chad Henne's 7-yard TD toss to Edwards less than five minutes into the third quarter provided the winning margin and was the lone score of the half.
San Diego State's "Dark Side" defense, which ranked eighth nationally a season ago, kept the Aztecs in the game in the second half, but Garrett Palmer could not convert 46- and 49-yard field goal attempts.
Michigan again went with a running-back-by-committee approach, with four backs getting a shot. Freshman Michael Hart came up with the big game the Wolverines needed, running for 121 yards on 25 carries. His 11-yard run on third-and-9 with less than two minutes to play allowed the Wolverines to run out the clock.
Henne, a freshman, was picked off three times and completed 11 of 24 passes for 162 yards and the two scores to Edwards.
Illinois 30, W. Michigan 27
CHAMPAIGN, Ill. -- E.B. Halsey's 40-yard punt return and a pass interference penalty in the end zone set up Illinois' winning touchdown with 1:02 remaining.
Halsey returned the punt to the Western Michigan 40 and Illinois (2-1) moved to the 19 in four plays. On second-and-3, Illini quarterback Brad Bower tried to hit Ade Adeyamo in the right corner of the end zone, but Adeyamo was hit before the ball arrived. The penalty put the ball on the Western Michigan 4 and Halsey scored his second TD of the day on the next play.
Western Michigan (1-2) had taken a 27-23 lead with 6:56 remaining after Blake Sims ran an interception back 56 yards to the Illinois 44. Eight plays later, Ryan Cubit hit Greg Jennings from 3 yards out.
Northwestern 20, Kansas 17
EVANSTON, Ill. -- Brett Basanez threw for a touchdown and ran for another, and Northwestern got its first win of the season.
Basanez was 20-of-33 for 192 yards and Brian Huffman added field goals from 23 and 21 yards for the Wildcats, who beat Kansas (2-1) for the second straight year.
Adam Barmann connected with Brandon Rideau on two fourth-quarter touchdowns to rally the Jayhawks from a 13-3 deficit
Kentucky 51, Indiana 32
LEXINGTON, Ky. -- Kentucky quarterback Shane Boyd had 335 yards of total offense and accounted for four touchdowns.
Kentucky (1-1) scored on seven of its first nine possessions, finished with 560 yards of offense and posted its highest regulation point total since a 77-17 victory over Texas-El Paso in the second game of the 2002 season.
Indiana had 412 yards of offense -- 214 more than the Hoosiers (2-1) amassed a week earlier in a win over then-No. 24 Oregon -- but lost for the ninth time in its last 10 meetings against Kentucky. Indiana was seeking its first 3-0 start since 1994.
