Thiel 45, Bluffton 14
GREENVILLE, Pa. -- Freshman tailback Stephen Minton made the most of his first start, rushing 19 times for 109 yards and a pair of touchdowns for the Tomcats. Minton led the Thiel (2-1) ground game as the Tomcats finished with 199 yards on the ground. Junior Tom McEntire, a graduate of Reynolds High School, finished with 85 yards on 18 attempts and a score. Thiel opened scoring in the first quarter when sophomore cornerback Steve Boyle (Howland High School) intercepted an Aaron Krieger pass at the Beaver 46-yard line and ran it back for a touchdown with just under 12 minutes left in the opening quarter. Minton ran for his first collegiate touchdown at the 2:27 mark of the first quarter, scoring from the 4 to put the Tomcats up 14-0. Bluffton's (2-1) Terrence Clayton took the ensuing kickoff 96 yards for the score to bring the Beavers back to within seven, 14-7, with 2:27 to play in the first. Thiel converted its first three drives of the second half for touchdowns. Bluffton was limited to just 145 total yards by the Tomcat defensive unit, led by senior middle linebacker Robert Drake (Chaney High), who finished with 5.5 tackles and a tackle for loss. Darrell Satterfield threw two touchdown passes to Brandon Chambers as Thiel racked up 420 yards of offense. Satterfield was an efficient 17-of-21 for 221 yards, including scoring strikes of 9 and 10 yards to Chambers.
St. Xavier 34, Malone 17
CHICAGO -- St. Xavier (1-2) blocked a field goal and returned it 75 yards for a touchdown in the first quarter. St. Xavier led 13-0 after one quarter and went in front 34-3 after three quarters. Brad Reifsnyder completed a pair of touchdown passes to John Regas covering 23 and 20 yards for Malone (1-1). As a team Malone rushed the ball 34 times for 80 yards, an average of 2.4 yards per carry. St. Xavier, in contrast, was 44-for-194 (4.4). Reifsnyder hit on 20 of 35 passes for 287 yards.
Wooster 28, Grove City 13
GROVE CITY, Pa. -- The Scots took a 21-0 lead in the first half but the Wolverines (2-1) rallied to pull within 21-13 in the third quarter. Grove City had its four-game winning streak snapped. Wooster now has six straight wins over Grove City. Tony Sutton scored two touchdowns for Wooster and now has 11 straight 100-yard rushing games. Sutton ran for 162 yards on 38 carries. Bradford Clark ran 5 yards for a Grove City touchdown to cut it to 21-7. Senior fullback Brandon McGlothlin ran for the other Grove City score. McGlothlin rushed 16 times for 56 yards. Adam Wargo (Champion High School) ran 16 times for 77 yards for the Wolverines.
Washington & amp; Jefferson 29, Allegheny 7
MEADVILLE, Pa.-- R.J. Zitzelsberger ran for three touchdowns to pace Washington & amp; Jefferson. Zitzelsberger rushed for 98 yards on 26 carries and scored on runs of 1, 7, and 5 yards. Washington & amp; Jefferson (3-0), ranked No. 19 in NCAA Division III, also scored on a 5-yard run by Chris Edwards and a 20-yard field goal by Kyle Sidebotham. Edwards completed 18 of 26 passes for 219 yards. The Presidents gained 425 to just 161 for Allegheny. Allegheny (1-2) scored its only touchdown on a 1-yard run by Jimmy Savage in the third quarter.
Defiance-Bethany
Remants of Hurricane Ivan postponed the game. The game, scheduled at Bethany, was pushed back to Nov. 20, unless either team is involved in the postseason playoffs.
Walsh 27, Olivet Nazarene 19
BOURBONNAIS, Ill. -- Dan Kane completed 16 of 25 passes for 216 yards as the Cavaliers opened 3-0 for the first time ever. Kane hit seven different receivers and connected with Darryl Owens for what proved to be the winning 20-yard touchdown with 8:34 to play. The TD gave the Cavs a 27-13 lead. Owens caught five passes for 81 yards. Chase Hostetler scored on runs of 5, 2 and 3 yards and gained 112 yards on 34 carries.
Northwood, Mich 56, Mercyhurst 24
MIDLAND, Mich. -- Willie Johnson and Kyle Kolbe rushed for two touchdowns and more than 125 yards each to pace the Northwood attack. Johnson led the Timberwolves (4-0, 3-0 Great Lakes) with 142 yards on 11 carries, including a 75-yard run to open the scoring in the first quarter. Kolbe ran for 131 of Northwood's 549 rushing yards, and scored on a 66-yard run in the third quarter. Ben Bluemle scored on a 79-yard punt return in the second quarter for Mercyhurst (1-3, 1-3 Great Lakes), which managed only 30 rushing yards out of its total 294 yards. Chad Mosher scored on a 42-yard interception return to give the Tiberwolves a 35-10 lead at the half.
Case Reserve 46, Kenyon 24
CLEVELAND -- James Rosenbury rushed for 211 yards and four touchdowns and Alex Harvey passed for three scores to David Kallevig, leading the Case Reserve offense. Rosenbury carried 38 times and scored on runs of 2, 2, 1 and 42 yards for the Spartans (2-1). Harvey completed 11 of 15 passes for 235 yards without an interception or a sack. His scoring passes covered 40, 31 and 14 yards to Kallevig, who had 8 catches for 186 yards.
