USWA Contract extended at Astro Shapes

A four-year contract was reached last December.
STRUTHERS -- By a vote of 193-50, members of United Steelworkers Union Local 9401 ratified a three-year contract extension Friday with Astro Shapes running until December 2010.
"There are no concessions," said Tony Sevi, union president.
"In this day and age, when companies are going under and the labor force is taking a hit, we're going forward united," he said after the vote.
"The company needed this, and so did we for our security," Sevi said. "I just wish companies and unions across this whole country would work together like this."
Frank Rich, the company's human resources director, said, "The company is extremely pleased that the members of 9401 United Steelworkers showed not only their support for their local representatives, but also their genuine concern for the future of Astro Shapes Inc."

The deal continues company-paid health insurance and provides 40-cent-an-hour annual raises to the 320 union members.
Top laborers would rise from $13.50 to $15.90 an hour during the contract.
A five-week strike ended last December when the aluminum extruder and union agreed to a four-year contract.
Sevi has said union officials approached the company about the extension to help secure more orders for the company.
