Organizations sponsor event to help fight prostate cancer

Prostate cancer is the second most common type of cancer in American men.
BOARDMAN -- The American Cancer Society, in conjunction with Forum Health's Cancer Care Centers and Humility of Mary Health Partners, is having a prostate cancer awareness event today from noon to 2 p.m. at Youngstown Harley Davidson, U.S. Route 224. Prostate cancer awareness week begins Sunday.
"We want to educate men about the importance of getting prostate cancer screenings and provide information about this disease," said Nicole Mazzoleni, rentals/events coordinator of Youngstown Harley Davidson.
Event theme
The event theme is "Live to Ride, Ride to Live. A map to Better Health." Besides information, a K105-FM radio on-air personality will be on site. There will be free food and door prizes. Also, prostate cancer survivors will be on hand for discussion.
Prostate cancer is the most common type of cancer found in American men, other than skin cancer, according to the American Cancer Society, which estimates that there will be about 230,900 new cases of prostate cancer in the United States this year. About 29,900 men will die from the disease.
Prostate cancer is the second leading cause of cancer death in men, exceeded only by lung cancer. While 1 man in 6 will get prostate cancer during his lifetime, only 1 man in 32 will die from it. The death rate for prostate cancer is going down because the disease is being found earlier, the cancer society said.
Black men are more likely to have prostate cancer and to die from it than Caucasian or Asian men. The reasons for this are still not known.
Can be found early
Prostate cancer can often be found early by testing the amount of PSA (prostate-specific antigen) in the blood. Another way prostate cancer is found early is through a doctor's physical examination.
