Man to face charges in injuries to officers

YOUNGSTOWN -- A West Warren Avenue man accused of fighting and injuring three Boardman police during an arrest attempt has been indicted on felony charges.
Michael Hamlett, 27, faces charges of felonious assault, tampering with evidence, cocaine possession, resisting arrest and two counts of assault. He was among a number of people indicted this week by a Mahoning County grand jury.
Police said Boardman patrolman Jack Neapolitan stopped Hamlett at Market Street and Overhill Road around 9:50 a.m. Sept. 7 on a stop sign violation.
During questioning by Neapolitan, Hamlett ran away and was chased by Neapolitan and officers Richard Blomstrom and Michael Mullins, who had stopped to assist, police said.
While trying to arrest Hamlett, Neapolitan sustained a head injury, Blomstrom suffered broken ribs and Mullins suffered cuts and bruises on his arms, police said.
Fireworks party
Also indicted this week were three people who had been arrested after a Fourth of July fireworks party turned sour, resulting in a huge brawl on the city's South Side.
Jonathan Morales, 19, of Market Street, faces charges of aggravated riot and two counts of assault. Carmelo Morales Jr., 23, Prestwick Drive, was indicted on two counts of assault; and Carmelo Morales Sr., 41, Brookwood Road, on one count of assault.
They are accused of assaulting Youngstown police officers who responded to an illegal fireworks display.
