HAMPTON, Va. -- Alonzo Coleman scored three touchdowns as Hampton gave coach Joe Taylor a 40-20 victory Saturday over his alma mater, Western Illinois.
Jerome Mathis added two touchdowns on a 99-yard kickoff return and a 60-yard pass from Prince Shepherd as the Pirates ran their record to 3-0 for the first time since 1999.
Coleman scored on runs of 5 and 2 yards and caught a 38-yard touchdown pass from Shepherd. He finished with 88 yards on 18 carries.
Western Illinois (1-2), which defeated Division II Cheyney 98-7 last week, found the going much tougher against the Hampton defense, which forced six turnovers. The Leathernecks' three quarterbacks combined for 219 yards passing but lost 38 yards on the ground.
The Leathernecks' Travis Glasford, who scored six touchdowns in the first half of last week's game, gained 98 yards on 26 carries and scored on an 11-yard run in the third quarter. He also led all receivers with 7 receptions for 73 yards.
Shepherd was 9-of-17 for 150 yards and two touchdowns.
Adam Smith was 15-of-24 for 213 yards and one touchdown for Western Illinois.

CEDAR FALLS, Iowa -- Derek Farmer ran for a touchdown and caught an 8-yard pass for the decisive score.
Stephen F. Austin (3-0) built a 24-14 lead in the fourth quarter, then held on to end a five-game losing streak to Northern Iowa (1-2).
The Lumberjacks broke a 14-all tie when Ryan Rossner kicked a 41-yard field goal 13 seconds into the fourth quarter. After Northern Iowa's Brian Wingert was short on a 55-yard field goal attempt, Stephen F. Austin drove to its final touchdown.
On third-and-goal at the Northern Iowa 8, Farmer slipped out of the backfield and was wide open when he caught Michael Williams' pass at the 5. He sprinted to the end zone untouched.
Northern Iowa came right back with a five-play, 80-yard drive that took only 1:25. Justin Surrency's diving catch of a 38-yard pass from Tom Petrie put the ball inside the Stephen F. Austin 1 and Petrie scored on the next play.
