DISTRICT Blocked PAT sends Quakers to defeat



Beau Papania led an offensive explosion in Columbiana's 70-6 win over Southern.
SALEM -- A blocked kick on an extra-point play with 11:41 remaining helped the Alliance High football team defeat Salem 21-20 in Friday's Metro Athletic Conference game.
Bryan Wright's PAT attempt followed Jarin Heath's touchdown, which pulled Salem to within one point -- the way the game ended. Wright's kick was blocked in the center of the line.
Alliance scored the first three times it had the ball before the Quakers (2-2, 0-1) rallied.
Kendall Davis scored twice and Steve Love once, while Matt Paidas made three extra-point kicks to give the Aviators a 21-0 lead.
Love filled in for Davis after he suffered a neck stinger in the first quarter and gained 153 yards on 19 carries. Davis gained 121 yards on six attempts.
Salem's first two scores came via Mark Kolich's 4-yard run and Heath's 25-yard pass reception from Kolich. The Quakers' third TD came when Heath, a defensive back, returned an interception 28 yards.
Kolich, the quarterback, completed 14 of 32 passes for 202 yards, but had four aerials picked off. Heath had eight receptions for 125 yards. Kolich also ran nine times for 49 yards.
Alliance finished with 273 yards, while the Quakers had 298.
Columbiana 70,Southern 6
SALINEVILLE -- Columbiana scored its points in the first three quarters in the Clippers' Tri-County League opener.
Beau Papania of the Clippers (3-1) triggered the offensive explosion as he rushed eight times for 198 yards, which included touchdown runs of 4, 56, 50 and 3 yards.
The Clippers' Tony Giannone and Joe Winters returned fumbles 24 and 75 yards for TDs, respectively.
Columbiana gained 451 yards rushing on 30 attempts and was 7 of 8 passing for 111.
Southern (1-3) rushed for 154 yards, but failed to complete a pass in five tries.
Beaver Local 14, East Liverpool 0
EAST LIVERPOOL -- Jim Bowersock ran for a touchdown and Josh Weese passed for another to lead the state-ranked Beavers (4-0) past East Liverpool (2-2).
Bowersock finished with 21 carries for 91 yards, while Steve Mercer added 55 yards on 10 carries for Beaver Local. Weese's scoring pass went for 29 yards to Dan Kinsey.
East Liverpool was led by Joey Wines with 13 carries for 46 yards.
Northwest 26, West Branch 12
CANAL FULTON -- West Branch (2-1-1), leading 12-7 at halftime, was shut out by Northwest (4-0) in the second half of the Northeastern Buckeye Conference game.
Scott Thomas scored on a 63-yard touchdown run and teammate Matt Catania returned an interception 67 yards for the Warriors.
Scott Weber rushed 30 times for 225 yards as he scored on runs of 1, 61 and 1 yards to spark the Indians.
Northwest gained 311 yards on 50 attempts and Kevin Stacy hit on 9 of 16 passes for 101 yards.
The Warriors gained 125 yards on 28 rushes and were 2 of 4 passing for 25 yards.
Rootstown 31, Southeast 28
RAVENNA -- Rootstown (4-0, 2-0 Portage County League) rallied with six points in the fourth quarter to overcome the Pirates (2-1-1, 1-1) in a battle of unbeatens.
Joe Knopick led Southeast with 18 carries for 95 yards and a touchdown, and he completed 15 of 28 passes for 136 yards, with an interception. Brad Finch added 11 carries for 43 yards and a touchdown for the Pirates.
