CITY/FEDERAL LEAGUE Rayen continues hot streak; Boardman falls to N. Canton
The Div. III Tigers routed Div. I Lima Senior, 34-7; Wilson lost, 6-2.
LIMA -- Freshman Gary Thornton scored on a 2-yard run and 31-yard interception return as the Division III Rayen School football team limited Division I Lima Senior to 32 yards, including negative yardage in the second half, in Friday's 34-7 victory.
Andreous Gillam scored on a 35-yard pass from Ryan Wallace; Jurrel Murray returned a fumble 30 yards; and Steve Slade added six points on a 37-yard run for the Tigers (3-1).
Charles Coles also hit four PATs for the winners.
Lima Senior's touchdown came on Earl Tippie's interception return from 8 yards out as Rayen's attempted punt from the end zone went awry.
Murray's fumble return developed when Lima failed to field a kickoff.
Of the three interceptions and one fumble recovery benefiting the Tigers, seniors Maurice Clardy and Corey McMillan had pickoffs.
The Spartans (2-2) ran 41 plays, including 28 rushes that netted 9 rushing yards and 23 through the air on 3 of 13.
Rayen ran 50 rushing plays for 197 yards and Wallace was 4 of 11 through the air for 74 yards.
Rayen's Dwayne Smith, a junior running back, had 67 yards on 11 carries, while Slade, a sophomore, picked up 33 yards on two carries.
Thornton's two-way positions are inside linebacker and running back.
North Canton Hoover 21, Boardman 0
NORTH CANTON -- Boardman lost two of four fumbles and was penalized eight times for 37 yards in falling for the fourth straight game.
John Bertsch scored two touchdowns on short runs and Jason Foote had one 4-yard TD run for Hoover (1-3) in the Federal League game.
Boardman threatened in the second quarter when the Spartans reached the 6-yard line. However, a penalty on first down pushed Boardman back to the 11 and the Spartans sputtered at the 4-yard line.
Hoover had 13 first downs to Boardman's six and out-gained the Spartans, 194-159.
Boardman's senior tailback, Nate Tacsik, rushed for 108 yards 22 attempts and had two catches for 7 yards.
Senior quarterback Matt Howells completed six of nine passes, including two to sophomore Luke George for 11 yards.
For the game, Boardman had 33 running plays for 133 yards. Howells' six passes totaled 26 yards. He threw no interceptions.
Hoover attempted 40 rushes that netted 165 yards and the Vikings completed four of 16 passes for 29 yards. The Vikings didn't fumble and received one 5-yard penalty.
Bertsch gained 79 yards on 18 carries.
