AUSTINTOWN -- Registration has started for the Austintown school district's latest adult education classes. Classes offered included computers, the Internet, eBay, investing, money management, cooking, cake decorating, volleyball, aerobics, and digital photography. Walk-in registration will be held from 3:45 to 6 p.m. Monday at Fitch High School. Register by phone until Sept. 27 by calling Paula Peterson at (330) 726-4542.
Workshop speaker
SHARON, Pa. -- Cynthia Hirtzel, dean of the William Rayen College of Engineering and Technology at Youngstown State University, will be the key speaker at a pre-college workshop from 8:30 a.m. to noon today at Sharon High School. The workshop is for high school students and their parents in Mercer and Lawrence counties. Hirtzel is the first woman to serve as dean of YSU's engineering and technology college. YSU is coordinating the workshop, and representatives will be present from its six undergraduate colleges, the Financial Aid and Scholarships department, Undergraduate Admissions and Honors Program.
Swiss steak dinner
PETERSBURG -- A Swiss steak dinner to benefit the fire department will be at 5 p.m. today at the Petersburg Fire Station. The price is $8.50, and tickets are available at the door. Carryouts will be available.
Guns stolen
WEST MIDDLESEX, Pa. -- Police said someone broke a front glass window at Shooter's Supplies at 9 Short St. and took eight guns valued at $2,000 at about 11:40 p.m. Thursday.
State park activities
LISBON -- A songbird hike will be at 10 a.m. today at Beaver Creek State Park, beginning at the Wildlife Education Center. The center will be open from noon to 4 p.m. A showing of the movie "Jumanji" will be from 8:30 to 10 p.m. at the campground ampitheater. The center will be open from 1 to 3 p.m. Sunday with a park naturalist on duty. A program on attracting bluebirds will be at 2 p.m., and a nature craft program, "Leafy Art," will be at 3:30 p.m. Weekend activities at Guilford Lake State Park include naturalist hikes, programs and crafts from 1 to 4 p.m. today at the camp host site at the campground. A showing of the film "Wild America" will begin at 8:30 p.m. near the basketball courts.
New museum display
MERCER, Pa. -- The Mercer County Historical Society, in cooperation with the Mercer County Conservation District, will offer a preview of exhibits on display at a new museum of rural life at Munnell Run Farm during the annual Community Harvest Festival. The festival, sponsored by the Mercer County Conservation District and Woodland Place, will run from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Sunday at Munnell Run Farm, one mile north of Mercer on Route 58. Exhibits feature farm and household implements, including a horse-drawn cultivator, a one-horse mail sleigh, a threshing machine, retired appliances and tubs. A special exhibit of historic voting machines is also on display.
Lawrence disaster
NEW CASTLE, Pa. -- Lawrence County commissioners have declared a disaster emergency in the county for Sept. 8 and 9. According to the declaration, flooding on those dates caused or threatened injury, damage and suffering to people in the county. It also endangered health, safety and welfare of a substantial number of people. Commissioners have directed Sharyn Critchlow, the county emergency management director, to take all appropriate action to alleviate the effects of the disaster. Critchlow could not be reached on Friday for details.
