Sound equipment missing
STRUTHERS -- Police are investigating the disappearance of a sound-mixing board from Struthers Middle School, 800 Fifth St.
According to a police report, school officials discovered the equipment, used to mix sound for music, missing more than a month ago but thought it might have been misplaced.
They reported the board stolen Wednesday after all attempts to locate it failed.
Legal aid volunteers
YOUNGSTOWN -- Community Legal Aid Services is seeking volunteers for its Volunteer Advocacy Legal Unit program.
Volunteers assist victims of domestic violence in obtaining a civil protection order.
Volunteers must complete 16 hours of training and be available twice a month from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.

School groundbreaking
YOUNGSTOWN -- Youngstown City Schools is inviting the public to a groundbreaking ceremony for the new Williamson Elementary School at 10 a.m. next Friday.
The groundbreaking will take place at the location of the former building, 58 Williamson Ave.
Stolen-checks trial set
STRUTHERS -- Angela L. Foster, 25, of Otis Street, will appear for trial in municipal court Nov. 12 on a charge of criminal simulation.
She was arrested on a warrant Aug. 14 in Youngstown.
Foster was wanted in connection with the cashing of four stolen checks at Frattaroli's Sparkle Market last November.
Fall clothing giveaway
YOUNGSTOWN -- The Salvation Army will conduct a fall clothing giveaway for needy people from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Oct. 6, 7 and 8 at its headquarters at 1501 Glenwood Ave.
Legal client reimbursed
YOUNGSTOWN -- A client of former Youngstown attorney E. Winther McCroom has been awarded $8,000 from the Ohio Supreme Court's client security fund.
The money is reimbursement for legal fees the unnamed client paid McCroom for services that he failed to provide.
McCroom resigned from the practice of law March 29 with disciplinary action pending.
The clients' security fund was established by the state Supreme Court in 1985 to reimburse victims of attorney theft, embezzlement or misappropriation.
Firefighter exams
YOUNGSTOWN -- The city civil service commission will accept applications for a firefighters exam from Sept. 27 to Oct. 6.
There has been some confusion that the application period starts Monday, which is incorrect, said Jennifer Labatte, civil service administrator.
Applications can be made from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the office on the seventh floor of city hall at Phelps and West Boardman streets.
Applicants with firefighter or emergency medical training should bring their certifications, and anyone seeking extra points for military service should bring proof.
Powwow postponed
NORTH LIMA -- The Soaring Hawk Village and Cultural Society Indian Powwow scheduled for Saturday at Woodworth Park in Beaver Township has been postponed in anticipation of bad weather.
The event has been moved to 2 p.m. Oct. 16 at Woodworth Park. Scott Conway, Beaver Township park board chairman, said the park board is concerned about possible rainy weather resulting from the remnants of Hurricane Ivan.
