Soggy day doesn't dampen enthusiasm

WARREN -- To mark the 20th annual Western Reserve Classic Charity Horse Show, organizers distributed umbrellas to the exhibitors -- a fitting favor for Friday's soggy festivities.
But the show's no stranger to rain, and those who've been putting on the event, which benefits the Animal Welfare League of Trumbull County, say it's no big deal.
"We've had more clear show days than rain days," said Melinda Galvin, a show committee member.
About 300 exhibitors -- roughly the same number as in previous years -- were expected for the show, which started Friday and continues through Sunday in Perkins Park. Weather forecasters predicted better weather today and Sunday.
Some exhibitors return yearly while others are new this year, Clifford said.
Change this year
One change this year is the addition of a second hunter ring to allow younger, less-experienced riders and horses the opportunity to participate, said Barbara Clifford, show vice chairwoman.
Planning for the show runs through the year, and set-up starts about 21/2 weeks before the event.
"We literally create a city down here," Galvin said.
Volunteers wire the park for electricity, enable it for plumbing and drive in trailers.
"We get a lot of cooperation from the city, especially Skip Hanes," Galvin said.
Hanes, a committee member, works in the city engineering, planning and building department and acts as coordinator between the city and the show, she said.
People working together is what keeps the show going, Clifford said.
"Everyone does their little or big part and it happens," she said.
Some committee members have been with the show since it started.
"Those of us who are still here from the beginning have watched our children grow and become grandparents," Galvin said.
Events to start
Events were to begin at 8 a.m. today and at 10 a.m. Sunday in the main ring.
The show remains strong, she said. "There are rumors every year that this is the last year and it's not," Clifford added.
