CROSS COUNTRY Durina, Mooney looking for repeat
Lordstown boys and LaBrae girls will defend titles at the Lordstown Invitational.
NILES -- Nine boys teams and 10 girls squads will compete in the Niles Cross Country Challenge at Stevens Park Saturday at 10 a.m.
Bristol, Ashtabula Lakeside, Howland, Conneaut, Mooney, Cuyahoga Falls, Akron Hoban, East Palestine, Girard and Niles are entered.
Mooney is the defending champion, with Colin Durina, who has run 16 minutes, 59 seconds this season, coming back to defend his title. The Cardinals will also feature Noah Brak (17:09).
Lakeside is the girls defending champ, with Mallory Dragon returning. She tied the course record last year.
Lordstown Invitational
LORDSTOWN -- Bristol, Mineral Ridge, LaBrae, Warren JFK, Western Reserve, Jackson-Milton, Brookfield and Lordstown will participate in the Lordstown Invitational at 10:30 a.m. at Lordstown Village Park.
The Lordstown boys return to defend their title and the run will feature Andy Swango of Bristol, Tom Andriko of Lordstown and Dennis Simpson of Mineral Ridge.
LaBrae's girls will defend their title, with the Vikings' Peggy Nichols, Mineral Ridge's Trisha Cameron, Bristol's Jen Armour and Western Reserve's Michelle Buck challenging for individual honors.
Malone College Invitational
CANTON -- The 36th Malone College Invitational is today and Saturday.
Ten men's teams, including Youngstown State, Ohio State and Malone, along with 12 women's teams, with Youngstown State, Mount Union and Malone entered will compete Friday.
Thirteen runs are set for Saturday starting at 8:30 a.m.
Boardman and Canfield will compete in the Division I boys race (39 teams), with Salem, Struthers, Beaver Local and United in Div. II (29 teams) and Southern, Badger, Leetonia, South Range, Columbiana and Lisbon in Div. III (27 teams).
Boardman and Canfield are entered in the girls Div. I run (33 teams), while Salem, Struthers, Beaver Local and United will compete in Div. II (31 teams) and Badger, Leetonia, South Range and Columbiana in Div. III (22 teams).
Boardman brothers Jake Lape (16:49) and Rick Lape (17:10), and Tim Weaver should be among the top contenders in Div. I, with the Spartans' Lauren Blase, Michelle Bistrica and Katie Stoll challenging in the girls run.
Salem's Aimon Scullion (16:13) and Paul Shivers (17:05) and the Quakers' Deirdre Clary (19:30) and Liz Shivers (20:23) and Struthers' Amanda Ardale (20:32) will compete in Div. II runs.
South Range's Dan Nemergut (16:18) and Andra Sanders and Leetonia's Melissa DiPanfilo (20:23) are entered in Div. III races.
