Each year Miss America spends countless hours on the road, traveling from city to city, performing various tasks. Through the years, the numbers add up.
20,000: The miles Miss America travels each month performing her duties.
24 to 48: The number of hours Miss America will spend in one city before traveling to the next.
$45 million: The amount of annual scholarships awarded to contestants at the local, state and national level by the Miss America Organization.
1921: The year of the first Miss America competition. Contestants were both professional models and actresses and amateur bathing beauties. The winner received the Golden Mermaid Trophy.
58: The number of newspapers from across the country who sent representatives to compete in the 1922 contest.
17-24: The age group a Miss America contestant must fall under.
1925: The first year the Miss America pageant received live radio coverage.
1925: The first year a true scandal hit the pageant. After the contest, former judge Howard Chancler Christy unveiled a statue titled "Miss America 1925," which portrayed that year's winner, Fay Lanphier, in the nude. Christy insisted Lanphier had never posed for him, but several newspapers later published untrue reports the contest had been fixed.
$2.5 million: The amount of Series E war bonds Jean Bartel, Miss America 1943, is reported to have sold.
25: The number of years Bert Parks hosted the Miss America pageant.
