'American Jobs' screening
NILES -- A free public film screening, followed by a discussion of outsourcing of American jobs, will be at 10:30 a.m. Saturday in the United Steelworkers union hall, 1265 N. Main St.
Filmmaker Greg Spotts will be on hand for the screening of his 62-minute film, "American Jobs," which will be followed by a discussion to be led by Professor John Russo, director of Youngstown State University's Center for Working Class Studies.
The documentary film has been featured on CNN's "Lou Dobbs Tonight." Spotts was invited by State Sen. Marc Dann, D-32nd, of Liberty.
Donations will be accepted at the door to benefit locked-out RMI Titanium Co. workers.
Ohio Lottery winner
ASHTABULA -- A resident of Ashtabula County won a top prize in an Ohio Lottery game. Hugh N. Vanwinkle of Dorset won $100,000 after matching five numbers in Tuesday's Buckeye 5 drawing. He filed a claim in the Cleveland regional office today.
After mandatory federal and state tax withholdings totaling 28.5 percent, Vanwinkle will receive a check for $71,500 in 30 business days. He picked his own numbers. The winning numbers were 5-7-13-19-20. Vanwinkle bought his winning ticket at Dorset Speedy Mart, 3276 Footville Richmond Road, Dorset. Dorset Speedy Mart receives a $500 agent bonus for selling the winning ticket.
Lightning sparks fire
NILES -- Firefighters and police battled a small fire after lightning struck a power line and ignited a tree. Crews were called at 10:53 p.m. to 57 Wilson St., where a tree in front had been hit by a downed power line from Thursday's storms and caught fire. No one was injured and the blaze was extinguished.
Powwow postponed
NORTH LIMA -- The Soaring Hawk Village and Cultural Society Indian Powwow scheduled for Saturday at Woodworth Park in Beaver Township has been postponed in anticipation of bad weather. The event has been moved to 2 p.m. Oct. 16 at Woodworth Park.
Scott Conway, Beaver Township park board chairman, said the park board is concerned about possible rainy weather resulting from the remnants of Hurricane Ivan.
Legal aid volunteers
YOUNGSTOWN -- Community legal aid is seeking volunteers for its volunteer advocacy legal unit program. Volunteers assist victims of domestic violence in obtaining civil protection orders. Volunteers must complete 16 hours of training and be available twice a month from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Those interested should contact the VALU office at (330) 742-5857.
Stolen-checks trial set
STRUTHERS -- Angela L. Foster, 25, of Otis Street, will appear for trial in municipal court Nov. 12 on a charge of criminal simulation. She was arrested on a warrant Aug. 14 in Youngstown. Foster was wanted in connection with the cashing of four stolen checks at Frattaroli's Sparkle Market last November.
Arrested in sex assault
SHARON, Pa. -- Police arrested a Dwyer Way man accused of sexually assaulting a female acquaintance after she took sleeping pills.
Police said Raymond Ortiz, 25, was picked up at the woman's home on Stambaugh Avenue around 6 a.m. today and charged with aggravated indecent assault, indecent assault and possession of a small amount of suspected marijuana.
Police accused Ortiz of sexually assaulting the 33-year-old woman early today.
She was treated at Sharon Regional Health System's hospital.
Ortiz was in jail pending his arraignment.
