BUTLER, Pa. -- The Department of Veterans Affairs Medical Center will observe POW/MIA Recognition Day with a program Friday at 12:30 p.m. at the Vagabond Center, Lyndora, just outside of Butler.
Any former prisoner of war or family member of someone missing in action who did not receive a formal invitation, as well as members of the community, are invited to attend.

Help for cemeteries
NEW SPRINGFIELD -- Don Kegarise of the New Springfield VFW Post 2799 presented a $100 check to the Springfield Township trustees Wednesday and promised the post will donate an additional $100 per month for a year to help maintain township cemeteries.
Trustee Shirley Heck invited anyone who would like to help with a project to repair old tombstones in township cemeteries to call the township building at (330) 542-2377.
Charged in bank robbery
NEW CASTLE, Pa. -- A federal grand jury in Pittsburgh has indicted Kimm Johnson, 40, of Wallace Street here on a charge of bank robbery, said U.S. Attorney Mary Beth Buchanan. Johnson also uses the aliases of Julian Glenn, Quincy Hatcher, DeWayne Johnson, Wayne Johnson and Levi Williams.
The one-count indictment says Johnson attempted to rob First Choice Credit Union on Wilmington Road on Aug. 17. He was arrested shortly after leaving the credit union by New Castle police. Police reports say he didn't get any money.
Reserve unit activated
CORAOPOLIS, Pa. -- Soldiers from the U.S. Army Reserve's 99th Regional Readiness Command's 328th Quartermaster Detachment, headquartered in West Virginia, has been activated in the nation's continuing response to the threat of global terrorism.
Eleven soldiers already have reported to their unit's home station and are being sent to a mobilization site at Fort Bragg, N.C., where they will receive further training and administrative processing before moving forward on a mission to provide coordination for the supply of bulk petroleum and water for U.S. forces, allied forces and host nations in a theater of operations.
Prostitution charge
SHARON, Pa. -- Police charged Valori R. Boles, 25, of Elm Avenue with prostitution and open lewdness after they said she was caught performing a sex act for money in the municipal parking garage on Pitt Street and Vine Avenue.
Police said a patrolman checking the garage found Boles and a man engaged in a sex act in a car in the garage around 4:30 p.m. Tuesday.
Further investigation showed that Boles had flagged the man down in the Jefferson Avenue area and got into his car, offering to perform a sex act for $25, police said.
Boles was held for arraignment. The man wasn't charged, police said.
Flag-burning ceremony
NEW SPRINGFIELD -- Anyone who has tattered flags can bring them to VFW Post 2799 on South Range Road where they will be properly disposed of in a flag-burning ceremony at 4 p.m. Friday.
Milton zoning inspector
LAKE MILTON -- Milton Township trustees have hired a new part-time zoning inspector. Nickolas D. Bellas of Warren will start Monday.
Bellas also is a constable with the Vienna Township Police Department. He served for eight years with the Howland and Bazetta Police departments.
Bellas received his master's degree in public administration and a graduate certificate in urban studies last year from the University of Akron.
